Firstly let me clarify that the movie you pick doesn't have to have come out this year. It could be a movie from 1963 for all I care, as long as you saw it this year FOR THE FIRST TIME.

With that said, let me begin be rebuffing what I know will be a common choice, The Prestige. While it is a great movie, I believe that the movie is to convoluted at times for it's own good. The whole movie is about magicians and the illusions they present and so forth, so it becomes very easy for viewers to not see the line were the illusion ends and the Sci-Fi begins. I remember when my brothers saw the movie earlier this year they didn't understand it at all. I explained it to them, and they explained why they couldnt understand it at first, and I understand why they couldn't. A lot of illusions come of as "magic" and the same applies for "sci-fi" elements. And with the whole movie being about subterfuge and double crossings and complex ploys, it's very easy to miss where the illusions ends and the sci-fi begins.

Another common choice will be District 9. I thought it was good, but not as good as some people here are making out to be. You would honestly belive that its the second coming of Christ by the way some people are talking about it.

Anyway, on to my choice. I pick "The Man From Earth". The movie is about a college professor who resigns and is about to move on with no explanation. His friends come over to bid him farewell and he reveals to them that he is actually a 14,000 year old man. Now this whole movie is like "Reservoir Dogs" in the sense that the entire movie takes place in 1 room. So if you are looking for intense action and CGI, this ain't the movie for you. If you want a thought provoking sci-fi flick, then there is no other better than this one. Oh yeah, if you are a highly sensitive Christian, I suggest you skip this one....

As of right now, the best sci-fi film I've seen this year was District 9. I still need to see Moon, though -- and chances are my favorite sci-fi film of the year would change when I see that one...

Dude, I've been looking everywhere for Moon. I really want to see that movie...I hope since its a limited release, it won't become one of those movies you have to kill 10 virgins to get (like Red Belt :x). And as for Solaris, I hope you don't mean the recent one with George Clooney :|

Empire Strikes Back? Kind of hard to say that since the Star Wars story falls under space opera (I'm fairly sure that's how they put it). I'll Terminator 2 in terms of a more strictly sci-fi movie

Luckily I have a indie theater that usually gets a lot of the acclaimed indie films, which reminds me I need to watch In the loop. :P And of course not. I'm talking about the 1972 Russian Version, it would Stalker but I saw that for the first time last year...

Star Wars is Sci-Fi. Anything with a remotely Sci-Fi element, even if its just to set up the plot (like Enternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) technically falls into Sci-Fi. Movies about Psychics and so on are in the gray area though. Some movies try to explain it scientifically, but you just have to access on a 1on1 situation. For instance Minority report has Psychics (Pre-Cogs) yet, that was heavily sci-fi. Other movies though, like Phenomenon, are debateable. Sure his abilities are explained in a pseudo scientific manner but is it sci-fi? depends on how u see it.

2001: A Space Odyssey. But in the theaters, it would have to be a tie between Star Trek and D-9.

District 9. But it's only out of D9 and Transformers 2 for me so the decision was not a difficult one.

Yes I suppose on this site I am generally considered "old" and I did see in when it first hit the theatres back in...'68 was it? But I was a tad too young to remember much but the AWESOME music which I became obsessed with. I did see it a few more times in the theatre during special presentation at art house theatres though.

I figured you would based on your previous review. I'm still on the fence as I think they're both find outstanding films in their own right and I'm not big on list placement types of line-drawing but right now my knee-jerk is Moon.

Gosh The Thing was just a sight to behold when it first came out in the theatres! I still remember the awestruck laughter thatswept across the crowdwhen one of the characters in the filmfirst sees the former human head slowly crawling away. Too bad it didn't get much of a following in the theatre during its initial run but I guess it was just a tad ahead of its time.

I can honestly say --- you may agree with me --- that Carpenter's The Thing is still ahead of it's time. People still try to duplicate what he did in that film and they still fail. I like Moon and would've picked it as tops but the more visceral film by Blomkamp just ratcheted things up to 11. Plus, it had a pig cannon!

I know I'm gonna take a bullet for this but let me just spit some truth :P I actually preferred "The Man from Earth" over "2001: A Space Odyssey" and...well, I wouldn't go as far as claiming its better than Alien (because Alien and Aliens are the mother of all sci-fi movies and Ripley own all!) but I would say they are at the same level. Another thing, while 2001 was a technical and directorial masterpiece, I think that if I were a critic and was actually rating movies, you know...for the people who watch movies, Average Joe, rather than making my review a dissertation based on a Movie, I would say 2010 is better than 2001. Don't get me wrong, I love 2001 and It's one of my favorite movies, but if you look at it objectively, If you had never read the book, 2001 is a bit too ambiguous. The whole last 40 minutes or so can be interpreted in any way, and while that is ok for some movies, the book never intended for the ending to be up to the viewer/reader.. The ending in the book is clear and definite. I think in this case Kubrick put artistic style over the source material.

Even though I've seen these movies before 09, I re-watched them on Blu Ray :P

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Blade Runner: Final Cut
  • Children of Men
  • The Fifth Element

But if that doesn't count I'll say District 9 or The Fountain (yes it has sci fi elements).

I still need to seen Moon.

Well you know that Stanley Kubrick initially approached Arthur C. Clarke by saying that he wanted to make "the proverbial good science-fiction movie." Therefore they worked on the film and book simultaneously and also providing feedback to the other. As the story went through many revisions, changes in the novel were taken over into the screenplay and vice versa. So I wouldn't necessarily call the book source material.

As you stated....District 9. It came out of nowhere from a guy I'd never heard of.
