The only anime shows I like are the cute comedy ones (Lucky Star, Haruhi, etc.), and then a few random serious ones thrown in like DeathNote and Gundam.
And if you like the stereotypic shonen action anime watch Bleach, and Naruto/DBZ. I think these are some "beginner" anime, at least it was for me. Of course, they are good shows, don't let the elitists here tell you otherwise.
I haven't watched many animes, only one other than Dragonball/Z/GT, and that's Twelve Kingdoms. I really enjoyed the story; although it doesn't have much action. But the dialogue and the characters are great.
