So it occured to me that while my generation probably remembers this sound pretty well and everything associated with it, there's probably a lot of kids these days who have never heard this before except maybe on TV. Kind of crazy to think this sound has gone from common place to utterly absent in only 11 or so years.

Do you remember me?

Some people still use dial-up. A friend of mine lives out in the sticks and can only get dial-up. I literally did hear that just last week.

Tell him to get a satellite internet connection. It's not as fast as a landline broadband connection but it still gets the job done a hell of a lot faster than dial up. My dad has such a connection for his laptop and he's browsed the internet in the middle of the mojave.

You know, I remember those days, but at the time, dial-up was all we had, so I didn't know that there was anything faster. I had a decent modem and connection, so I survived. If I had to go BACK to dial-up, I'd probably jump off a cliff though...

Your friend is misinformed. He can get satellite high speed.

As shocking as it may sound, he doesn't use the internet that much. Simple country folk don't need no stinkin' 'puters (although he loves his Blackberry to death).

Yep when I first got internet... well dial-up. I'm still wonder till this day why it makes those sounds.

I think it was around 1999-2000 when I had it. I remember shopping for my first computer too.

I will never forget that sound... Back when I was 8 I would always try to connect to the internet in offline mode and would hear that constantly. The browser had saved information from websites so it appeared to work offline. Man was I stupid...

"No you can't get on the internet yet, I'm waiting for an important phone call, you can get on after I'm done" Ah yes, the good days when you either needed to have two phone lines or live in a family where everyone was fighting between using the internet and the phone.

That sound also didn't make it easy to sneak onto the computer at night to look at porn (which was also a crazy internet revelation at the time). :P

:D pretty much, except it was for a flash gaming website. The games still worked offline since I had played them before, but I always got pissed off when a different game would not load.

exactly. i remember staring at the computer waiting to do something; then my mom had to make a call right when i get connected. but back then, i wasn't so enthused about the internet. not many sites were up and wasn't really a point in spending more than an hour on the computer a day.

The mid to late 90s was a glorious time for the web. It wasn't what it is today but it was mind blowing back then.

This is what I use, and I live in the middle of the woods, we set the dish up so it just looks through a hole in the trees and it works well enough! :)

I used to have that about 5 or 6 years ago because it was the only thing we could get where we lived. Then we got satelite which was hardly any faster. Now we have fiber optic from a tower and it's fast enough for PS3 online.
