Ya, because picking a religion just to double down and not go to hell is the right thing to do. We both know this is not true, in any religion

I don't see why I should have to conform to what the majority thinks. I like the idealogies a lot of religions have, but I just don't like the idea behind it in general.

I don't think so. Assuming that works it sounds like God just wants a checklist done and doesn't care what is in anyone's heart or mind. Paperwork God doesn't sound like one that should be worshiped.

That's the whole reason I turned atheist in the first place, was I was only doing it out of fear of Heaven and Hell, not out of love for God, so it felt empty and wrong and I was tired of worrying about it.

Hm. We don't believe in any sort of 'Divine Being', and if there was one and we were just 'being on the safe side' then we'd be in more trouble with him/her/it. Also, this thread = trolling much?

I suppose the majority was right a hundred years back with the racist beliefs on blacks? Appealing to the majority is a logical fallacy, furthermore put in this perspective on the populous the majority are usually always wrong...

I'm not athiest, but I always kind of figured that if there is a fair being out there, s/he would give me some credit for acting in accordance to my beliefs. Not even those who say they are religious always follow what they say they believe.

Hell I don't even think Athiesm is the disbelief of god.. It is merely the fact there is no evidence tu substantiate it, thus there is no point to talk about it.

Have you read anything about history? Ever find a situation where a majority is wrong?

Argumentum ad populum - You should read up on it.

either this is a joke thread, or OT is 14 years old. believing in god for the off chance that their actually is a god and you want to go to heaven is not the reason to be religious. i wont say all athiests, but i myself personally pride myself on not needing to be a sheep to a religion and not needing to follow a belief / rule system to govern my life and tell me how to live it, or even guide me.

well then thats just sad. your philosophy is that you would rather live your life in fear of being incorrect ( not believing in god, but then dying and finding out he is real, thus not getting into heaven ) , instead of thinking for yourself, and taking the logical stance that makes the most sence to you.

never is it right to make a choice based on fear. it is just like when the states wanted to seperate from Brittan, many people sided with Brittan for the sole reason that they feared that the states could not win a war, so they sided with Brittan for fear of repurcussions of siding against them. that is the kind of ideology you are promoting.

The point of being religious is that you believe in the religion you belong to. If I keep a bike, just in case, that doesn't mean I know how to ride it by default.

Actually, Pascal would wager that that is the perfect reason for belief.

Pascal's wager only pertains to atheism versus Christianity, though. Assuming that one of the religions in existence is actually the right one, it would still be odds of a couple hundred to one that you would pick the right one.

But how did I know which one is the right religion? :(

By your logic everyone is gambling.

And as Homer Simpson said, "But Marge, what if we chose the wrong religion? Each week we just make God madder and madder."
