I always hear atheists saying stupid stuff like "Religion is only for people who can't accept their own mortality to feel comfortable with death". But really what is more comforting? Religious afterlife or atheist "afterlife"?

Religious afterlife:

Eternal suffering (this is what happens to 99,999...% of the people according to South Park)

Reincarnation. Also a form of eternal suffering although a lesser kind of suffering.

Meanwhile athest afterlife:

Oblivion. No suffering whatsoever. In fact it's a kinda like paradise considering ignorance=bliss. Since this is the ultimate form of ignorance it is also the ultimate form of bliss.

So it's really the atheists taking the easy way out when looking at death.

Personally though I don't belive in any of these, although closest to my view is reincarnation, but these are the mainstream views.

Your interpretation of Atheists' beliefs on the idea of afterlife is simply that we are so ignorant that when we die all we will have is bliss?

Sounds legit.

I don't know why, but for some reason I'm starting to believe that once we die, our life just starts over. Ever had a dream of the future? I'm not talking about how you dream something and then do it the next day, I'm talking about having a dream, forgetting it and then that moment in time comes weeks months or even years later that you dreamt and you remember the dream. Stupid I know but hey; I can dream can't I?

How would reincarnation be suffering? Sure, if you came back as a worm that would seem kind of lame to us now, but surely even as a worm we would be happy and satisfied when they find a nice apple to dig into or what not. It's not like a worm thinks to himself everyday "Man it sucks being a worm...".

All the energy that ever was and ever will be was contained in a single point at a point in spacetime My body is made of this energy converted into matter When I die I shall return to the universe Where my energy will go, I do not know Hopefully back into life in one form or another at some point...in this universe or the next

There is way more suffering than pleasure in this world. WAY more. Even if you are a human. That's like almost fact.

Well I guess reincarnation could be considered a gamble. A gamble of which you have infinity tries of. Either way though, it wouldn't always be suffering every time.

Then agian I'm not sure how the reincarnation belief works entirely...

Oblivion is "kinda/sorta" = paradise. Ignorance is = Bliss. So (Thoughts of) Oblivion + Ignorance = Bliss(?)

I'm really not following this. I just want some clarification on his opinion.

Also, Atheists taking the easy way out when thinking about death... Yeah... compared to other religions that believe in an afterlife or a higher/lower plane of existence where we either rot in damnation or stay in heaven with all the cool people. Just don't agree about this point at all.

The religious claim to know what's to happen to them after death, going to Heaven. The atheist claims we will reduce to nothing. You're telling me Heaven is a less comforting prospect than ceasing to exist forever?

Well, if we're using Southpark for an authority, then I can't say as I haven't seen that episode and don't know their reasoning. But I'd think if you're religious, you're going to Heaven. Isn't holding faith the only thing that matters in getting there?

The best thing about atheism is that you don't have some external source dictating how you should live. Life being pointless is exactly what makes it beautiful.

As for no afterlife, I find it a frightful thought that once we're dead, we'll be gone forever. Then again, religious convictions or lack thereof shouldn't be based upon which belief system offers the most comforting afterlife.

When I die, I honestly want my body to be thrown into the woods or something for w/e organism to have. I like the idea of being recycled.

I just find it funny out of the billions of organisms that die, we are the only one who really have afterlives. What happens to poor old bacteria when they die?

I thought the atheist perspective is that your mind vanishes. Everything you've ever known is gone, your ability to percieve is gone, there is NOTHING. It is not blissful or miserable because there is NOTHING. Right?

what you just described would require one to have consciousness, when you are dead you have the consciousness of a rock. send it back and rethink,

there is no paradise, not ignornace, no bliss there is nothing. Getting a grasp on the concept of nothing is not always easy for people but that is what you need to do to understand if you so desire to

Thats what I think.

There isn't any "atheist beliefs" as atheism doesn't have any system of beliefs, all it means is to not belief in a god.

what athesists believe is this.

when you die you are carbon 14.

So any attribute you apply to what you might think aethists believe after they die despite them telling you otherwise will also have to apply to carbon.

SEANMCAD

and what religious people believe is this:

oh im too good to be just another being in the world, no my ego demands i be better so, i must be immortal.

I am agnostic and I have atheist friends. my personal belief as well as theirs is that when I die there is no conciousness left. no paradise, no anything. nothingness cant 'not know' because it has to be aware to know it doesnt know.

never the less you are telling me what I believe is not what I believe

are you trolling?

A lack of consciousness means, essentially, absolute ignorance. Now, if you consider ignorance to be paradise, (wtf, mayormajor?) then that's paradise.

Ignorance=bliss Absolut ignorance=absolute bliss Now I base this just off a stupid saying. But really there is no suffering, you're not aware about your non-existance. You don't even exist. Maybe not paradise but I can think of worse things, that's for sure.
