Are there black people in Japan?

Hi, I was reading a thread about Japan, and i have serious question. I have never left Canada before and I want to go on vacation to somewhere i've never been. Japan seems perfects, since I am a anime fan and I like technology. My question is, would it be hard for a black person to go to Japan? I can't speak any Japanese, except for a few which are constantly repeated in animes such as "what" "impossible" "bastard" "idiot" and "die" so most likely I will try and keep speaking to a minimum. Are they any gangs, kidnappinngs i need to be weary of since I will be a visible minority down there

Depends where you're going. And yes there are black people in Japan. Buy a phrasebook and/or a travel guide before going to Japan by the way. It should help.

They generally like black people from what I've been told since they don't see us very often (this is what my ex boss told me though).

There are these things called air plans. They allow people to travel great distances to other countries for various opportunities. This process of moving people is called immigration. Some blacks have used this process to move to Japan for opportunities.

Interesting. Becareful when you travelling abroad, because you don't know about the map of the country, you should use proper guide, and legal travel agent.

There probably are, but I would imagine the vast majority of them being tourists , as far as I understand, Japan is almost completly ethnically Japanese (there is alot less diversity then in most countries).

That said , the Japanese aren't known for being racists.

I've seen a few black people in Tokyo when I lived in Japan.

Of course there are. Btw, take me with you when you go; I've been dying to go to Japan! Specifically Okinawa and Tokyo. :P

Of course there are black people there, they are just very few in number. I knew a good amount in my area alone when I lived there. In fact my best friend moved close to me when he got a job there, so that worked out pretty well.

To put it simply, a large amount of Japanese, maybe even a majority outside of the Tokyo area, will never see a black person in the flesh. However, in Tokyo, you'll see black people every now and then--still not very many though, and they'll most likely be tourists from America.

Yes, i have quite a few black friends on the JET programme in Japan now.

And you wont be outwardly discriminated because you're black. If there is any, it'll be because you're a foreigner and it would have happened to anyone else thats not Japan. And even then, you might just get a few stares, nothing like whats here in the west.

Nope. No Black people allowed. As soon as you set foot on Japanese soil, this will happen.

Probably just tourists. I think it would be very difficult to be black and live in Japan.
