basically i want to get my nephews some fully automatic nerf guns with lots of spare ammo for xmas but my sister is against the idea because she believes that toys like these sow seeds of violence.

not just nerf guns though, she thinks that giving kids weapon like toys is a bad idea because it will turn them into thugs when they are older.

what do you think about this?

btw they are 2 boys aged 6 and 8.

If sis doesn't want the kids to have the Nerf guns, I wouldn't advise going against her wishes.

That being said, I can't stand parents like that. I have a sister-in-law like that and her sons are becoming the biggest wussies right before our eyes.

We used nerf guns as kids, even at our after-school program, and none of us turned into thugs.

Your sister needs to lighten up.

Thugs? You don't honestly believe that, right? Who here played with water guns as a child? Or pretended their finger was a gun? It's a perfectly normal thing to do and it's not the reason why you'd grow up into a "thug".

I was raised as a proper Christian child: no SuperSoakers, Nurf guns, violent games/cartoons, junk food, etc..

All that work for nothing, eh ma?

...well, I'm not fat, so I guess you get gold star for that.

I think a real gun would be more appropriate. Teach them gun safety, how to fire a weapon, and when it's appropriate to use them.

I think that they are very very very fun, and no child should be deprived from their awesomeness.

I think violence is instilled in other ways like spanking or physical/sexual abuse.

Simulated violence has always been a part of play. Look at basically every predatory mammal out there. The young play with eachother, doing sneak attacks, pouncing, clawing, biting. They learn that what they are doing is potentially harmful. Ever played with a dog that takes a chomp out of you and you yelp and it comes to you licking you as an apology? Any child with a healthy state of mind a good parenting will be able to distinguish play and actual violence. The impact of a foam dart for play and laughs vs is a bullet to kill someone is a pretty big distinction, and a child can understand that. If this is not the case then a good parent will intervene. The same goes for violent movies and video games. There is a correlation between simulated violence and violent acts, however correlation does not equal causation. Mental instability, due to socio-economic and parenting issues, even mental illness in some cases are usually the underlying reasons kids become violent, grow up to be violent, and are therefore extremely attracted to violence simulation (games, media, play etc...)

Not whatsoever, parents who ban their kids from having nerf guns and water guns are stupid and nazi parents. Nobody dies playing nerf, and nobody gets really badly hurt. You're not giving them potato guns. Basically just make sure it's explained to them not to shoot each other in the face, only in the body. Seriously what happened to the days of little green army men and setting up full blown war scenes on the living room floor? Guns are fun for kids, it's just a game. They're not thinking of loading up a handgun and blowing their brother's head off or anything just because they got a fluorescent gun that shoots foam darts.

lol probably on some level that is true, but I'm also guessing that many of us here are living proof that it's not.

Personally I loved Nerf guns back when I was a kid, not only do I not own a gun now, but for the most part I find guns to be boring. Only exception to that is when they are in video games.

Hate to say, but TV and video games do have some sort of impact of psychological development. It probably won't turn someone into a killer overnight, but I don't think it's a stretch to assume that if you hand a kid a nerf gun and let him watch something ridiculous and "thug"-like on TV, the kid would probably imitate what he saw on TV.

When I was a kid I played with my share of nerf guns. But I was also reading Tintin and watching Indiana Jones. I think it's safe to say I've been shooting Nazis since a young age :P. But it's all about the kid's imagination, and if he wants to play cops and g's, well, I guess that's what society has come to.

Me and my friends use to have nerf gun fights all the time in various indoor settings and it was insanely fun. They are probably the best toy you can buy a kid that age. Convinve her that it is better for them than some new video game.

No.

On the note of Nerf guns... They're awesome.
I only ever had a limited amount of darts to go with mine (A tiny needle-looking one with collapsable handle, a lazer-pistol-looking one, a bow, and a rifle-looking one), so I only played indoors and even then lost a bunch behind furniture D:

Found out the other year that they have fully automatic ones. Awesome.
I'll end up buying one at some point.
