Topic title. Earlier this decade I got heavily into synth wave (started with Drive of course, then was cemented with the Hotline Miami titles) and I've since grown a real fondness for the genre. Magic Sword, Carpenter Brut (although that combines elements of dubstep as well as electric guitar), Chromatics, Electric Youth, Unbending Puppets are all among my favorite musical acts now. Anyone else like the genre? What are some of your favorites?

Because of Thor Ragnarok's trailer, and a fitness channel that I follow called Buff Dudes, I have recently developed a fondness for it. No specifics though, I just run a playlist on spotify and everything I hear I pretty much am enjoying it.

Hell yeah. I like Mega Drive, LazerHawk, Dynatron, VHS Glitch and a bunch of others. I'll listen to synthwave mixes on YouTube, so whatever the hivemind suggests.

Yes. I started to become a fan before I realized that this was even a thing. I remember particularly liking the Drive soundtrack before I knew who Kavinsky was or much about the genre. I started making Pandora stations based on a few songs in particular which segwayed into a bunch of other artists. These days I throw on various YT channels like NewRetroWave and ThePrimeThanatos as background noise while I work.

I am interested in this. If it's anything like the music from the Blood Machines trailer I will check it out.

@DEVILinIRON: Blood machines is seriously dope, and if you want more music like that, look up Carpenter Brut. They did the score for it, and pretty much every single song of theirs is an absolute banger.

@Byshop:Yeah, Drive was the start of it for me, too. I discovered Electric Youth through them, and they're one of my favorites now. Been following them this whole past decade.

Space Boobs Blood Machines was... yeah. Great soundtrack. Not so sure about the rest of it, but if you like space and boobs it's got both in ample quantity.

Regarding Drive and the genre, it's not like this isn't the type of music I didn't already like listening to. I just had no idea anyone was making "new" music like this. That was a really cool discovery.

Somewhat, I like the idea of where the genre gets its influences, and I like some of the artists, some music videos. Still pretty niche, but there's potential.

Probably a genre better suited for use in movies or games, not quite something I can just listen to for sake of listening, except for a few artists.

Incredibly boring genre and I equate it to modern day elevator music. I detest when streamers play it because it tends to put me to sleep.

You know, I program synthesizers and do sound design as part of my career but I actually dont listen to this genre much at all. I find it to sound a little bit dated.

There are certain songs that I've heard that definitely feel like background music, but there are a lot of them that are legitimately great

That's literally the point.

This thread is about dead but I had one thing that was just too good not to share:

I got in my car this weekend and my 7 year old climbed in the back. I had a Spotify Synthwave playlist playing from the night before and a particularly electronic/synth song was queued up. When my son heard it, this was the conversation that resulted:

"Eeeeeeeeeh! Daddy, what's that?"

(I looked at the console) "That's Synthwave music, buddy."

"Ewww. It sounds like a robot barfing!"

Wow, savage commentary on my musical tastes, kiddo.

Synthesizers like OutKast or 80’s pop music?

More like John Carpenter movie soundtracks. Some synthwave gets kind of pop-ey but a lot of it is more kind of brooding/atmospheric.

  • Trevor Something
  • The Midnight
  • Quixotic
  • Droid Bishop

Hope you like those TC.

@Byshop: John Carpenter movies look neat I never heard of them before.

You've almost definitely heard of his films even if you aren't familiar with the director. He was behind the Halloween series, for example.

Among his best films are:

  • The Thing (1982)
  • Prince of Darkness
  • They Live
  • Escape From New York
  • Big Trouble in Little China
  • Christine
  • Starman

He composed the music for all but the last two in that list.
