Hi, i'm interested in purchasing an electric guitar, and as an absolute beginner, do you guys have any advice on what I should start off with? I was thinking about getting an Epiphone SG or an Ibanez of somesort. I guess I shouldn't be worried about playing any metal tunes at first, although that would be cool:).

Yamaha Pacifica's are amazing guitars. The basic ones are cheap, and they create an amazing sound. Matthew Bellamy of Muse used to play live with one of them.

Most of the time the guitar itself doesn't determine the quality sound, it's pretty much up to the pickups and the amplifier. However some guitars have a longer lifetime, if you can afford an Ibanez go for it.

1. Buy a used guitar. (don't buy a kit) 2. Buy a new amp. 3. Practice 4. If guitar is right for you, buy a more expensive guitar once you're skilled. 5. ???? 6. Profit! The first 2 steps should cost you around $300-400.

For metal: An Ibanez RG series guitar would be a good choice. Even ESP guitars are good for the price.

I was planning on spending no more than 500 for the guitar and amp:P. It looks great though.

I'd say start off with a cheap guitar and get an amp. I wouldn't worry about pedals yet.

practice a lot, and never give up. also make sure you never pick up bad playing habits (anchoring, wrapping your fretting hand thumb around the neck, exposing too much or too little of the pick, etc); you may need to take a few lessons for this but you can also learn with online guides. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1091796 this thread has a lot of useful information, and the people on the forums can be helpful. and as for a beginners guitar, look to yamaha, epiphone, or ibanez. avoid bc rich and squier.
