Simple question with a ton of answers. If you could go back in time and view one day in history, where would you go? For me, it would be D-Day. I'm a huge fan of naval history and warfare and what's better than seeing one of the largest gathering of ships in history. Oh and feel free to discuss actual time travel if your about that life.

I'm probably one of the few people who enjoys sci-fi a lot but never wanted to do any time travelling. I'm happy where I am. Although I probably wouldn't mind seeing live dinosaurs either =p When are they making a real Jurassic Park? (Yeah, I know the DNA in mosquitos preserved in amber doesn't survive that long =/)

My first thought was to be able to be in right place to watch the event that caused the death of dinosaurs. But then it would be amazing to see the "first" things happening like when humans first discovered and used fire, or the wheel or to go and see ancient colonies and peoples.

It would be really hard to choose one I think, but probably to see what event caused the death of dinosaurs would be something spectacular unless it was just dinosaur cold hahah

Only one day? Man, that's tough to choose.

I'm assuming if we are to travel back then everyone and everything that happened on that day is still there?

May 12, 2012, the day of my wedding. I'd like to go back and enjoy it as a guest, since it was such an awesome time, but I never got to fully enjoy it because of the stuff we we had to do (pictures, meeting guests, etc).

@jasean79: Nice choice. I'd be happy with just getting the photos from my wedding...the girl who took the photos is great but so slow with the end result...been waiting for over a month now...

Well, it would still be me, but I'd rather get to enjoy it without all the busy motions of doing this and that without actually enjoying the day for how great it was (as a guest).

@chaoscougar1: It wasn't about being a guest. Is about experiencing it all over again. It's still fresh in my memory but in 10 or 20 years I would probably like to relieve that day as vividly as possible. The whole "happiest day of your life" is only a cliché until you're actually doing it. I got married a month ago and both me and the wife are still riding the high from it.

This.

What's great is we also had a videographer for our wedding, so we get to "see" it again and again. But nothing beats actually being there on that day!

okay, so let's say we do have time travel, just curious, what's to say you go back in time to a desired time but then you're in a different place in space, I mean the planet moves around the sun, the sun around the galaxy, the galaxy through the greater cosmos... to have the technology to move through time must also have the same capability to move through vast amounts of space... at that point I'd probably be more interested in traveling through the stars than going back in time

I would prefer going to the future but going back in time to witness the Battle of Thermopylae would be pretty amazing. Just as long as I don't have to fight. :P

Well if it was just to view things and not actually change time, I want to travel to the future, maybe in the year 3000. But if I could time travel to change things, I would write in a notebook of things to do and not do, winning lottery numbers, sports team to bet on, investments to invest in, and maybe even give ideas of an invention. My problem and question would be is what will happen to the present me. Do I go back to the present but every thing change. Will alternate memories enter my mind later.

What if I could just send my consciousness back to my younger me. So instead of wondering if my past me will do what the future me advised, I'd just take control. I think I like this sending my consciousness better, so I could relive and do things better. What if I could do something greater like warn people about what's to come and it can save their lives. So many possibility and outcome for time traveling.

So many people here seem to want to see the future. I really wouldn't want to do that...I cannot imagine going a couple hundred years into the future, being marveled by all the technology and all the things that they could do then, all the problems they solved and all the new way of life and then having to come back to the present and knowing that I would have to spend the rest of my life without being able to use any of it.

Of course there's always the possibility that in the future everything will be fucked up and I die on arrival...in which case there would be no need for me to concern myself with anything ever again =p

hmm.. never thought about the coming back part and having it suck.. i already feel like the future is going to be ridiculously awesome compared to now so the disappointment is already baked-in.

since we're talking crazy time travel stuff anyway i'm going to assume whatever time machine we use will provide some form of protection to avoid traveling to environments that would instantly kill you. would you be permitted to participate in the destination time or merely observe it?

then the human race would cease to exist after their deaths since two men can't reproduce :/

@comp_atkins: But if you built a time machine now, how could it predict what sort of conditions it needed to prepare you for in the future? Time travel stuff is always so complicated...

I never understood how you could even change the past...I'd think that's impossible; if you go back to say 1940 and "change" something then nothing will happen because it would already be changed by you by the time you were born, therefore it was always so. Time travel shows always give me a headache =p

@korvus: That's how I always felt about Back to the Future Part 2. In that movie, Marty goes 30 years into the future and sees himself. I think that's impossible and here's my theory:

If he left in a time machine and physically disappeared from this world in 1985, then in 2015 he would never exist because he left 30 years prior. So, technically, he would be the same age when he arrived because he's been missing for 30 years. There's only "one" of him at that point, not two.

@jasean79: I remember absolutely nothing about Back to The Future, but didn't he go back to his time after that part? If he did, when he saw himself in the future that would be himself after coming back from that travel into the future.

Argh, might as well just do it Doctor Who 's way....it makes no sense but it happened because I'm The Doctor!

Back to the Future Part 2 was all sorts of messed up with regards to its rules. Like, after Biff steals the DeLorean, he never should have been able to go back to 2015 to drop the DeLorean back off. That should have resulted in him going to the ALTERNATE 2015 since he already changed history by giving himself the sports almanac. Therefore, Doc Brown and Marty should have been stranded in the future forever, with Biff having no possible way to bring the DeLorean back to them.
