Name one western country above the US on that list...

That is a stupid question, there are many "Western" nations on that list above the US. Or do cut out any nation that isn't as rich as unworthy?

[QUOTE="jointed"]Do you completely ignore the context in posts? Sonicare was talking about the error in the OPs initial statement...and you decided to come with another cheap comment about the US vs. the UK.

I see...facts against the UK are a cheap shot but against the US they are okay. Double standard much?
Facts that actually matter are okay...
If you can't come with any concrete statements then don't bother at all...I've NEVER seen you defend any other western country...but whenever there is a minor negative about the US you're all over it. Please, you bias is obvious...

Then I guess you haven't been reading posts..
Batting a thousand here today mate...I don't bash other countries.

That's a stupid excuse. The only western (western as in NATO and EU) nationon that list above the US is Poland, now if you want to compare yourselves to Poland then fine...

Au contriare...it matters a great deal since all the bashing is being done by those from the UK. Just pointing out a CORRECT FACT about their country.

When Brits are arguing in here they're bashing the US, but you're just pointing out a correct fact? Now that's double standards.

Putting down other nations now? Or maybe you heard too many Polish jokes?
Either way, you made a very inaccurate claim - I can only guess it's either one of ignorance or arrogance about what the term "Western" means.

How the US runs their affairs actually isn't the business of anyone BUT the US. How would you like it if I started telling you how the UK should be run?
And for the record.....since violent crime in the US is decreasing....something must be working..whereas across the pond it's increasing which means MAJOR PROBLEMS.

I'm not putting down any nations. Again, if you want to compare yourselves with a post-communistic state that is still under massive development then fine.

Am I missing something? Crime as a whole in the UK has decreased, murders with firearms has increased...now, that's a problem but not a MAJOR ONE.

Poland is a prime example of a successful transition from a communist economy to a capitalist one, and has the strongest economy in Eastern Europe. It's people work hard and are on it's way towards becoming a valuable part of the EU, despite some economic challenges.

Then I guess if murder by firearms is not that big a deal...this thread was unnecessary.
Sure its a problem, no one is argueing that.. But most honestly don't think it will curve violence if gun control is made.. As it stands violence is actually going down in the US with out such said control.
sSubZerOo
You already have gun controls in place, and it could be argued that the drop in violence in the US over the past 10 years coincides with those controls.
Over my head? No sir. I'm asking you to back up your statements with evidence...but you obiously can't.

Still doesn't change the fact that it has a HUGE unemployment rate.
Decreases in violent crime in the US while increases in the UK has been pointed out. However, facts are not invited into this thread. It's bash the US time again you know...
LJS9502_basic
Why are you talking about rising violent crime in the UK? Violent crime is down 43% over the past 10+ years.
Another cheap ass try on beating your way around the bush...you got NO evidence whatsoever.

I am relieved that Brits with sense recognize rising violent crime as a major problem, and do what they need to do accordingly, unlike you.
Cut the crap. Crime has been steadily decreasing since the 90s and I'm very confident in our law enforcement. This is far from a MAJOR PROBLEM (notice the caps).

Voilent crime has not been decreasing in the since the 90's. It reached it's peak about 12 years ago, decreased and has stayed the same except for slight increases. Meaning it's stayed the same, while gun crimes have become worse. Where do you think that leads?

Crime AS A WHOLE has been decreasing since the mid-90s...why should I worry about slight increases? Again, this is far from a major problem.
[QUOTE="Frattracide"][QUOTE="jointed"][QUOTE="sonicare"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="james28893"]Who knows. Perhaps it's because Americans are more violent that so many people get shot there (interesting statistic in The Times today- more murders are committed with firearms every two days in the US than a whole year in the UK) as you made it evident the gun ban in the UK did little (I also hope you are aware people can still buy shotguns in this country too).
jointed
 Just Americans? Reading some history will give you a different perspective.
Of course it's just americans. There has never been any violence in the world until the creation of the united states of america. The history of the world is one of peace, unity, and dignified respect of life and human rights prior to the US. Just look at the history of Europe, of Asia. . . . . .
You can use sarcasm all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that you have one of the highest, if not the highest, murder rates in the western world. I believe the OP was referring to that...
The US does not have the "western worlds" higest murder rate.
Name one western country above the US on that list...
Okay, how about the country at #1 on the list, Colombia?
[QUOTE="jointed"]Where did I mention violent crime?
The_Ish
Thats what we are talking about, in relation to firearms crimes.
Keep up, mate.
No, that's not what we're talking about. You were accussing me of not recognizing it as a major problem, when it isn't.

It's not a major problem when the only increases we see are minor ones.

*sigh*
It was arguably a major problem in 95 but not now, after an almost 50% decrease.

Where are you getting your numbers that gun crime is rising? I'm seeing a rise for about 5 years right after the gun legislation passed, peaking around 2002 or so and essentially dropping ever since (e.g. 14% drop last year).
