This happened to me today.

A 16 year old girl had jumped out a second story window of her apartment and ran to me for help. Apparently, her mom was beating her up (jumping on top of her, pulling her hair, and scratching her face). She saw me outside with my dog and ran up to me, begging to let her inside (which I did). She was visibly shaken and in tears. Her mother told her she was going to have her taken away and that she was at fault. I offered to call the police, but she didn't want me to (I'm kicking myself for not calling anyway), so I let her use my phone to call a friend who's mother came and picked her up.

Should I have called the police? This isn't the first time her mother has become physicaly aggressive towards her and I don't think it's safe for her to go back home. On the other hand, maybe I'm being too compassionate. In any case, I did my best to cheer her up.

What would you have done?

Yeah, it probably would have been good to call the cops. Sounds like kinda tough situation for you to be in though.

I do not know what I would have done at the time being that one does not always think as clearly during the heat of the moment. Based upon what you said of the story I think you handled the situation rather well. Should you have called the cops? I'm not 100% certain but you did a good thing in letting others also get involved. At the very least this was not an incident that no one will ever know about and that certainly should help the situation. Simply leaving her alone would have been a much worse course to take.

I wouldn't have called the cops either, it's her mother, she can call the cops on her mother if she wants, it's not my business.

I really wanted to, but she was convinced that she would be found in the wrong.

If it really is serious abuse, you should stand up for what's right and help her. No child should endure that abuse. I'll warn you, though: being a good Samaritan is quite difficult.

Calling the cops does sound like it would've been a good idea, but despite that, it is still a great thing you did. There are a lot of others who wouldn't give a second glance simply because they don't want to get involved with other peoples troubles.

It just happened today and she is too young for me anyway (though she is very pretty).

I just reread your post, and I saw that you were asked not to call the police. I think you did the right thing; assuming how crazy the mother is, I think that if she found out that you called the cops, she would probably assume that her daughter asked you to do so, and she would be in even more trouble.

I probably would have called anyway. If the girl's story is true, then it's best for her abusive mother to be brought to justice. If she's not telling the truth, then she'll be found out for it.

Yes, but if the best thing is for her to get out of her motherrs house, then authorities need to get involved.

So, let me get this straight.
She jumped out of a second story window and ran right after?

and your all only discussing how she looks, rather than the fact that she's obviously ****ing awesome?
You did fine though, TC. Calling the police wouldn't have been terrible either. I think I would've voiced my concerns with the people who picked her up.
