That true. FIFA likes to keep tradition. No Euro team has yet won the WC when it was hosted in the Americas.

This sucks Brazil is decimated for the match against Germany and Argentina, besides Messi, doesn't have much going on for them. I guess it's up to Costa Rica honoring the tradition of an european never winning in America... Challenge accepted.

The reason why belgium lost is that after argentina's first goal, they just killed the game, and belgium's squad isn't experienced enough to deal with that, hence why they lost.

This reminds me of the Greece - Costa Rica match with the Dutch losing a ton of chances to score and Navas being mvp for the Costa Ricans. Right now Holland should strive to score in the extra time and avoid shooting penalties as Navas is on fire and Cillessen is cold being a spectator in the game so far.

Looks like Van Gaal had an ace in his sleeve. Totally wasn't expecting that goalkeeper substitute for the penalties. I wonder if that was a known strategy to the Dutch. @deeliman should know

Crazy move to sub a goalkeeper on for the penalties, not a fan of Tim Krul talking to everyone before their penalties though, made him look like a cocky douche.

@johnd13 Van Gaal (our coach) brought an expert with him to help him decide who to sub out gp with in case of shootouts

I don't get the hype with Costa Rica, they were bunkering the entire game and relying on winning in the shootouts. I get that they're the underdogs and all, but they weren't playing attractive football at all, and I don't get why you would want them to advance even though it pretty much guarantees a 0-0 or 1-1 snore fest.

I have to say my first post was very poorly constructed grammar-wise.

Costa Rica and teams like Greece know they are out classed in every single game thus they need to resort to anti football tactics like trying to push it to penalties or playing for a lucky goal off a set piece or penalty. I'm glad they lost because watching them is boring as ****.

I'll have to agree. A team that's dominating and is creating dozes of chances to score deserves to win. Except for Greece, it's my country and I couldn't be more biased - they should win whatever means necessary. :P Though I'll have to admit we were pretty good in attacking against Ivory Coast and Costa Rica, I was pleasantly surprised.

They only attack like that when they are down a goal or two, which is a very dangerous way to play the game. The American team did the same and both got burned pretty badly because of it. Costa Rica and Belgium looked quite beatable in the respective matches.

Now that we only have attacking teams left, the cup should be a lot more interesting (although the dutch may switch back to their 5-3-2 formation)

In my opinion i think Netherlands is better organized than Argentina, so i see Germany vs Netherlands, but i may be wrong though

Bummer we lost :( but it didn't really feel like a loss. I have to admit Holland played a better game but Costa Rica put on a great defense. Now I hope Holland wins the cup so we can say that we lost against the world champions in penalties ;). Well not really, since I'm half brazilianI'm rooting for Brazil first! :)
