Mass killings seem to be a daily thing now.

They are just making the news more often.

Mass killings (50-100 dead) happened 2-5 times a day in Iraq and Afghanistan for years. Nobody cared.

NO NAME. NO PHOTO. NO NOTORIETY.

The mass media turns mass-murderers into notorious celebrities, which in turn inspires mentally deranged losers to carry out copycat mass-murders in order to gain fame and notoriety. While mass-murders should still be reported, the people perpetrating these atrocities do not deserve to become famous, as that will only inspire more mass-murders.

Japan is still far safer than the US (which has a homicide rate more than a dozen times higher than Japan)... which is why a mass-murder in one of the safest countries is all the more shocking.

That actually doesn't really make sense for indoor facilities, which is where these mass murders happen most often anyways. Yes, this guy could have killed a lot more with a gun, but not with a truck.

There was a while when airplane crashes were 'popular' and we heard a disproportionate amount of news about them to the point that several people I know did not want to fly somewhere anymore. It wasn't because suddenly 4 times the amount of airplanes crashed, it was just the type of news that was 'hot' so we heard more about crashes that have always been happening in all the years we heard so little about them. I always hope it's the same with this kind of sad news. Not a sign of where we are at in the world, but a sign of the kind of news that is popular.

That's all fine and well, but the reason the mass media turns mass murderers into celebrities is because the public eats that shit up. It's easy to advocate that the media not over-sensationalize this stuff, but they're GONNA do it so long as the public goes nuts over mass-murders. That's sort of asking them to walk away from money on the table by NOT reporting on stuff that people want them to report on.

Isn't that human nature? I'm not sure you can blame the people for paying attention to horrible stories. And yes you are right, you can't blame journalists from wanting money. The only solution I see is to think of a payment method that does not involve the amount of viewers or interest a story generates.

Yup, this has academic backing too. Experts agree with this. And is irresponsible media coverage only helps encourage this kind of violence. Ever noticed how mass killings are almost always followed by more mass killings, copycat killers?

The popular jRPG Persona 4 brought up this topic as well.
