Mother's outrage after her son is suspended because HE was beaten up on school bus for wearing 'Make American Great Again' hat

  • Gavin, 12, was attacked by peers for his political beliefs on Wednesday
  • The sixth grader was wearing a pro-Trump hat when he was bullied
  • Gavin was suspended from his middle school after the incident in St. Louis
  • His mother Christina Cortina said she felt her son was made an example out of
  • A video captures the middle school student being targeted on a bus
  • A student yelled at Gavin 'you want to build a f****** wall?' before punches were thrown

A mother of a sixth-grade student is outraged after her son was suspended for getting beaten up on a school bus for wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat.

Gavin, 12, was filmed being verbally and physically bullied by his Parkway School District peers because he wore his political beliefs on a hat, on Wednesday, in St. Louis, Missouri.

He was suspended after the incident, although he was the one attacked. This caused his mother Christina Cortina to be outraged and she expressed concern over letting him wear the hat again.

Kids will be kids, but the faculty staff are on the wrong for suspending a kid wearing a hat. I understand that some school policies do have rules about wearing something political, but kids who throw the first punch should also get the punishment.

Your misinformed mate. When two kids fight, both get suspended no matter what.

Would love to hear the other side of the story though. This report seems so one sided. We also need to see the video.

Start indoctrinating kids as early as possible, where they're the most vulnerable.

Social media. A lot of parents won't let their kids play mature games either.

I'm convinced we'll never see a positive thread by @FireEmblem_Man:

@indzman: Most of them have legitimate reasons to be concerned. Definitely more than the person that hoped for a trump win, just so he could get his fill of "lulz"

Sad as those kids probably know so little of how complicated and extensive politics are. Given the state of American grade schools.

While I've been suspended in grade school for an incident where I didn't throw a punch. I still think its ridiculous to suspend a kid that got jumped. What the hell is he suppose to do ? And what kind of message is the school sending, by suspending a kid who was outnumbered. Perhaps he may have said something provocative not covered in the article. Other than that, its encouraging him to not voice his opinion. And to just keep his mouth shut out of fear. So he won't get jumped and suspended. Totally unamerican if that's the case.

The parents should find out where the kids live and burn down their houses.

Assuming they live in a house and not an apartment or a ditch or something...lolololol

This violence is happening all over America. Both adults and their devil spawn leftist kids are involved.

The root of the problem is that the left/anti-Trump crowd sees themselves as inherently good. Thus everything they do can be explained away. The dubblethink is straight out of 1984. They're literally shouting "Say NO to hate" while they're beating people unconscious with metal pipes.

Yup.

A spokesperson for the Parkway School District said the fight was investigated and that all students involved have faced 'consequences.'

The spokesperson added the Missouri school district was also working to sit all the students down and reach an peaceful understanding about the incident and politics.

The article says the other kids were punished too, but doesn't go into any detail. Probably can't due to privacy reasons, and can only talk about the child whose mother came forward with the story. Maybe the other kids were suspended too, maybe its was just a verbal reprimand. All we can to is make assumptions.

Hopefully all involved are abel to reach an understanding.

You act like you knew that based on your original response. Or do you mean she's looks like a model?

Anyway, I clicked the linked and lol. 3 things + bonus.

1. Major plastic surgery and makeup here.

2. She's latin but the kid is clearly white. I highly doubt the kid is mix.

3. I thought the kid got beat up. No bruises at all.

Bonus: lol, the kid still rocking the hat in the interview.

The mother was probably just using her son as lure hoping for something to happen so that she would get some media attention and possibly be noticed by Trump. Maybe she wants to be the next wife or a mistress on the side.

That interview with the mom and kid shows evidence in your theory.

But this qoute confirms your theory.

"This caused his mother Christina Cortina to be outraged and she expressed concern over letting him wear the hat again."

No matter how much we disagree with each others views, nobody should be harmed for them. This kid, who probably doesn't understand too much about Trump, other than his popularity should be able to wear a hat that shows that support without fear of being harmed for it.

Not all liberals are like this, and these liberals are giving the rest a bad name.

Next, political shirts will be banned and they will be viewed as gang clothing in schools. The left and the right, just can't get along. The right fought Obama just like the left is fighting Trump. It is a crazy situation we are in, and I don't see it getting better anytime in the near future.

Don't they eventually lose that. I mean when a child starts school, he/she is mostly learning values and social skills from school.

Not exactly what I'm saying. There is a split in the country and it is devolving to violence. The violence in this case seems to have stemmed from political views. I don't know if the kid in the hat was talking trash, or if the other kids were bullying him because of the hat. These kids have opinions, (both sides) even if they don't fully grasp the repercussions of what their views would do to society and their well being as a whole. That is what I mean when I say they don't really understand politics yet, not that they don't have opinions on them or take sides in the matter. The boy obviously has an opinion if he is wearing a trump hat.

I identify as a liberal, so I'm not bashing liberals. My statement about these liberals making other liberals look bad may have been a bad statement. I just don't think kids should be worrying about this stuff yet.

@iambatman7986: Politics use to be banned from the dinner table. That is no longer the case. We must face the consequences. What we say and do, what we see on TV, etc...does play a role on childrens lives.

When Trump brags about grabbing girls by the pussy, kids are watching. When he says he wants to build a wall to keep out the Mexican rapist and drug dealers, kids are listening. When he says he wants to ban all Muslims, kids do fear.

This is why people argued Trump was not Presidential. Not a proper role model in the eyes of America, her kids, or around the world.

We are now forced to grab water hoses and stand watch at the fire. Our lives are forever ruined for this fire never sleeps until its put out. Will will now live in fear for what may become of our future.

I don't know why anybody doubts the political awareness of a 12 year old. In these days you get your own political talk show with the intellect of a 12 year old. Just turn on the TV.

I didn't think I said anything about believing any news source. In fact, I said I didn't know who or what actually started the conflict. I just feel like kids shouldn't be involved in politics like they are today. When I was a kid, back in the day, this stuff wasn't in my face like it is in the faces of the children of today. My nephew, who is 11, walked up to me the last Friday and said "We're getting these Muslims out of here, Trump says so". Kids shouldn't be seeing or hearing that. It's sad to me, that's all.

I'd like to hear the other side of the story first. But regardless, kids will be kids. For all we know, that kid could've been wearing that hat to troll people at school and he might've been. Or those other kids beat up a kid for no real reason. Pick one.

Kids at that age do not understand politics. Both of those kids have gotten their super limited political education from their parents. At election time I saw several Facebook posts about how parents were so proud their kids were glued to the tv chanting and cheering for Trump. That's not something they'd pick up on their own and they have no clue what's really going on. Brainwashing =/= education. But so few people take the time to do actual and real research about the state of the country and the causes they are supposedly for or against, it doesn't seem like anyone actually wants political education.

I don't know why anybody doubts the political awareness of a 12 year old. In these days you get your own political talk show with the intellect of a 12 year old. Just turn on the TV.

They certainly get it from somewhere, even if they don't fully understand the implications.

In general, kids are waaay smarter than we give them credit for. My son is eight, and he's developed a pretty good BS meter already to the point that he's rolling his eyes at a lot of things adults are telling him (although this is more in the science and natural history realms at the moment). A twelve year old, given adequate exposure, can certainly start developing political ideas.
