The "Hottest MCs in the Game" is back! It's highly regarded, extremely controversial and bolder than ever. We're proud to announce that starting next Monday (August 17), we'll begin to reveal our list of hip-hop's top 10 kings of 2009 on MTVNews.com. This one is going to be a doozy!

As always, the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust has been keeping a close collective eye and ear to the game. We've been watching who's been moving the needle on the culture, who has impacted the game with superior skill, unmatched styIe and uncannily superior execution with their art and business. It's not just music — it's about a movement. The Brain Trust sequestered ourselves and deliberated a ranking, and the results will begin to be revealed next week — with the unveiling of the top spot happening on Diddy's "Making His Band" airing August 24 at 10 p.m.

For the MCs who think they belong on the list, ask yourselves the same questions the Brain Trust members ask themselves: Has your heat been sustaining? You can't just be hot in your 'hood or in your region. Does your reach go national — and international? Can you set the globe on fire?

Last year, thousands and thousands joined in on the conversation we first sparked in 2007. Last year was Kanye West's time: He took the crown from the champ of two years ago, Lil Wayne. 'Ye killed guest spots such as Young Jeezy's "Put On," and his Graduation was the opus of its time.

In 2009, we want you to put up and definitely not shut up. Let your frustrations or your props be heard. Each time we reveal another pick on our list, comment on it. Send e-mails, send video — we're going to put lots of it out there. And today, blast off! We want you to start sending in your lists — but be sure you're talking about the Hottest MC right now, not of all time (we already gave Jay-Z that trophy a couple of years back). There's a poll below with names of certain selected MCs: All you have to pick the name you feel is the hottest right now. The results will be tabulated. So get to it!

Link

My Predictions:

1. Lil Wayne- Tha Carter III had not come out when the last list was made

2. Drake- "buzz so big I could prolly sell a blank disc"

3. Gucci Mane- hottest mixtape rapper out now, but lacks the success of Drake atm (see "Best I Ever Had")

4. Kanye West- he's been jumping on a ton of peoples' songs and outshining them

5. Rick Ross- Deeper than Rap came out

6. Young Jeezy- the Recession came out since the last list was made

7. T.I.- Paper Tail came out since the last list was made

8. Kid Cudi- up and comer with a hit song and mixtape buzz, working with Kanye West

9. Asher Roth- up and comer with hit song and decent sales

10. Jay-Z- he's Jay-Z, people go crazy with every new song we get off of the BP3

honorable mention

50 Cent- they'll still prolly find a way to sneak him onto the list because of his beef with Rick Ross

It still was a #1 album. No one is going gold nowadays.

I don't understand what the result mean right now. Some of them are all the way full but yet they say "< 1%" and stuff.

American Gangster is double platinum I believe. Its true that no one is going gold, but he's on like 350 000 which isn't hottest in the game by any stretch, especially when you consider he claimed he would sell 13 million (!) and that his last two albums both sold more.

Trilla sold a little more than Deeper than Rap (190k vs 160k first week) and he was #4 on the list last time. It's not that big of a drop off. He's still gonna be on the MTV list...

I just looked at the RIAA site and American Gangster is not double platinum.

It appears Wikipedia has lied to me.

I also didn't know he was in last years list. My bad. I suppose I just disagree with the basic idea of him being one of the hottest in the game rather then your placing him on a list.

Deeper Than Rap has really good production Ryder... that's one of the main reasons I like it. Rick Ross is an OK rapper on it and has some pretty dope verses, even though they are rare. The guest spots also give it a lot of entertainment value... they aren't amazing or anything but some of the collabs are pretty enjoyable.

oh, I didn't notice that these were Orlando's predictions

My predictions (in order):

Eminem (Highest selling album of 2009)

Drake (Biggest pre-release buzz)

Lil' Wayne (He's Wayne)

Kanye (He's Kanye)

Gucci (Crazy buzz in the streets)

Fab (Album is getting a lot of love)

Young Jeezy (Had a lot of 2009 singles from his last album)

Kid Cudi (Second biggest pre-album buzz)

OJ tha Juiceman (He's ridin' off of Gucci's buzz)

Jay-Z (A decent amount of buzz surrounding B3)

Wildcards: 50, Asher Roth, Rick Ross, New Boyz, T.I., Game (lol), Slaughterhouse (got the innanet going nuts, but at most I think they'll get a MENTION)...

And for those that laugh at the Slaughterhouse suggestion, they are currently number 8 on the iTunes chart and the top selling rap album on iTunes and has been in the top 100 for Rap and R&B for 18 days on Amazon (currently like 14th)...so they are selling...

Fab (Album is getting a lot of love)

IamHush

Might be a good sleeper pick. His new album is #1 on the charts this week, despite not even selling 100k.

Agreeing with you, Orlando that album sales really don't signify ****.  If I remember correctly, Tha Carter III was the top selling album of 2008 with a little over 3 million sold.  Compare that to ten years ago when the top 20 all had 2 mil plus and Backstreet Boys sold 12 mil (I think; it was something ridiculous) in one year.  What happened to those days?

And also, yeah, Drake and Weezy.

"And ****s will buy it too and claim they got it for they sister" 8)

Edit: The top five right now are 50 Cent, Joe Budden, Lloyd Banks, Eminem and The Game. :?
