Halfway mark of the year has arrived. Any changes to your lists?

Here's some differences with mine:

Old list:

Gimme yo' top 10 ninja.

1. Grimes - "Visions"
2. Cloud Nothings - "Attack on Memory"
3. Chairlift - "Something"
4. Porcelain Raft - "Strange Weekend"
5. La Sera - "Sees The Light"
6. Schoolboy Q - Habitats & Contradictions
7. Weird Dreams - "Choreography"
8. First Aid Kit - "The Lion's Roar"
9. AlaunaGeorge - "You Know You Like It EP"
10. Houshold - "Items"

HM: John Talabot, "Fin" ; The Men - "Open Your Heart: ; Lil' B - "#1 *****"

Colt45fool

Updates:

1. Grimes - "Visions"
2. Cloud Nothings - "Attack On Memory"
3. Liars - "WIXIW"
4. Porcelain Raft - "Strange Weekend"
5. Chairlift - "Something"
6. Royal Headache - "Royal Headache"
7. La Sera - "Sees The Light"
8. Lower Dens - "Nootropics"
9. Schoolboy Q - "Habitats & Contradictions"
10. Beach House - "Bloom"

HM: Weird Dreams - "Choreography", First Aid Kit, "The Lion's Roar,"

Biggest Surprises: TheGrimesrecord really has blown me away. Same with thatCloud Nothingsrecord. Both came from artists that I'd never paid much attention to. The latest record fromBeach Househas also really caught my fancy. I really didn't like them much before this year. I'm really impressed with their latest record & new emphasis on production. They want from making beautiful records to beautifully engaging records and it shows just how much they've been working on their craftsmanship. Another band that's really surprised me isAlabama Shakeswith their "Boys & Girls" LP. The record is nowhere near my top 10, but the level of talent the lead singer has, has me really excited for their future releases. Royal Headache's debut LP has also really caught my eye. Soulful punk music....and damn good.

Grimes, "Genesis" (deam pop)
Cloud Nothings, "Our Plan" (pop-punk, post-heardcore)
Beach House, "Lazuli" (dream pop)
Alabama Shakes, "Heartbreaker" (soul, country rock)
Royal Headache, "Really In Love" (soulful post-punk sound)

Records your favorite review sites aren't talking about, but I'm going gaga over:I haven't seen any commotion over thatPorcelain RaftLP which is a shame because it's been pushing my top 3 all year.La Sera'ssophomore effort is exactly what I expected as far as improvement over her potential laden debut record.Household's "Items"LP has received minimal hype this year, In fact, it's actually impossible to find as a free download this year. Still, it holds as one of my favorite LPs from this year.Violens, "True"LP is just barely out of my top 10 this year, but it's received little fanfare from indie heads this year, which is a shame.

Porcelain Raft, "The End Is Silence" (dream pop, shoegaze sound)
La Sera, "It's Over Now" (noise pop)
Household, "Our Song" (punk on occasion, pop on occasion)
Violens, "Der Microarc" (pop music

That Awfully Overrated Record:Hands down,Japandroids, "Celebration Rock,"has been the most overrated LP this year. Also, I see nothing to go crazy about when it comes toZammuto'sself titled LP,Big KRIT's "4 Eva N A Day"orAb-Soul'sSoul Controlrecord (though I was thoroughly impressed with songs on both albums. Also, I wish everyone would get off the latest LPs fromJack White, Julia HolterandLotus Plaza-- neither are doing a thing for me.

I like your tastes. PROPS on that Sharon van Etten love. Surprised anyone liked that Jack White record so much. I like it, but it kind of bored me also.

Well I'm just a big fan of Jack White in general. I definitely like the first half of Blunderbuss more than the second half of it because the beginning sounds more like a Jack White project to me.

I really loved the heavier tracks on the record over anything. The slower tracks like "Blunderbuss," don't really go anywhere...there are a few that are good, but most of them miss. "Sixteen Saltines" is a dope ass song though

I had never heard of Grimes, but saw her perform last year at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin...been listening to her since. Visions is a great album. In no particular order these have been my favorite so far:

Nacho Picasso - Lord of the Fly

Nacho Picasso - Exalted

Hodgy Beats - Untitled EP

Schoolboy Q - Habitats & Contradictions

Grimes - Visions

I haven't noticed anyone mention Nacho Picasso on here. Anyone heard him? The beats on his albums are dope.

Fat Tony from Houston just released his new album, but I haven't listened to it yet. I am sure it will be on my list later though.

Are her live shows any good? The performances I've seen on youtube were pretty unimpressive.

It wasn't the great. She didn't do much to get the crowd going, but her set was one of the earlier ones of the day so that could have something to do with it.There was a weird dude dressed in rags dancing on stage for most of the set. He looked like he was up there tripping in a world of his own. I assume it was intentional because nobody kicked him off.

I was most impressed with hearing her music and not so much her stage presence...not bad, but I wouldn't pay to just see her. I really just happened to hear to great music coming from that stage and checked it out.

Here's a linkfrom her FFF Fest performance.

Yeah from what I can tell Grimes is really inconsistent live. A big festival setting in the middle of the day seems like it would be awful for her, she's probably better in a small club.

I haven't seen her yet but I'll be seeing her @ Pitchfork in the middle of the day. Thankfully the rest of her day is pretty stacked (Schoolboy Q, Sleigh Bells, Cults, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Flying Lotus, Cloud Nothings, Wild Flag, Danny Brown) so even if she's not great I'll get my money's worth.

Do a lot of people get down with that Death Grips record? Or Death Grips in general? I was bumping it after theneedledrop gave it a 10/10, but I just can't get into it. The album annoys me moreso than anything. Colt45fool

I started to feel like I was the only one who disliked Death Grips....glad there are others out there. Their first album annoyed me even more than their new one.

They get alot of love but it is very hard to get into, definitely not for everybody. I remember not really liking their first album outside a handful of tracks. It had to grow on me and by the end of that year it became one of my favorites.

If you guys are really loving that Grimes record, you gotta get into some of her other stuff. Her other LPs are dope too & there's a lot of etheral/4AD/dream pop/gothic originators that Grimes borrows from a lot (Cocteau Twins are the most obvious comparison - there are some more recent acts that dropped LPs last year though like Chelsea Wolfe & Austra that remind me a bit of Grimes as well - nothing is closer than the Cocteau Twins though.)

And just to finish my pitch, here's an incredible Cocteau Twins record from 1984.

Good list, have you heard KRITS debut album? (Live From The underground)

Yeah I have. Liked it, but not as good as his other two mixtapes. 4 Eva N a Day is simply amazing, one of the best tapes to ride to as well.
