When I consider why I was so fond of the Gameboy back in the day, it's because it never had any shortage of RPGs to play: Golden Sun, Sword of Mana, Final Fantasy, Lunar, etc. I could even play Dragon Ball Z JRPG-style if I wanted to. To be fair, the DS did a pretty good job of keeping up with the Gameboy's JRPG library. But looking at the 3DS, it's an entirely different story -- we've essentially got two Mario RPGs (though Paper Mario was filth), a sloppy port of a PS2 Tales game, Pokemon (which I am excited for) and Shin Megami Tensei, which is just not my cup of tea. And while Bravely Default looks promising, it will also come out when the 3DS is hitting (or beyond) its three-year anniversary -- that's three years of the 3DS being a deadzone for JRPGs. Moreover, where exactly is Square Enix with Nintendo these days? Outside of Bravely Default, they've got nothing slated for Nintendo platforms. What happened to all of the remakes and Crystal Chronicles titles it put out? Its CEO made no mention recently of handheld projects that don't involve mobile phones and tablets. It's just so ... disappointing.
Are JRPGs dead on handhelds? For the life of me, I can't understand why. They must be inexpensive to produce, too, considering it's still perfectly acceptable to make a top-down, 2D RPG. Heck, I'd almost prefer them that way.
