seriously i have no idea they didnt give me any lives im prettysure it doesnt give you anything cool at the end so whats the point.plz post something if you know what they do.
Old arcade games had scores, so they might have added it for nostalgia. Also, if you have a lot of points, it shows that you most likely played the game a lot.
As far as I know it's been in every 2D Mario I've played and that list includes Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and this game. I've never payed attention to what it does at certain numerical points, so I can't say. I do know that in this game if you get a star, run into everything you can. You get more points, and if you break a certain number of points at a certain pace you get a ton of 1ups.
Same reason for the theme in Toy Time Galaxy or the Super Mario World theme in Galaxy 2. everything in Brawl. Fan Service. Nintendo is really good at that.
Nope the points don't give you anything. But if you want to truly beat the game 100% though you'll try to max your score:P Talk about replay value lol.
Also as said before, they've been in most, if not all other Mario games so Nintendo probly wanted to keep the feel of a traditional Mario game.
