So they are blue ray format, but not blue ray or?SoAmazingBaby
Yes its essentially Nintendo's own version of a Blu-Ray disc. Regular Blu-Ray discs used in a PS3 have a read speed of 6.5MB/s and Nintendo's discs have a read speed of 22.5MB/s. Both can hold 25GB.
So essentially they improved it.
Nintendo's Optical Disc and I absolutely LOVE the rounded edges of them. Feels smooth like butternini200
Man I swear after touching those discs everything else feels super cheep in comparison!
Wii U games are on a modified Nintendo optical disc. A alternative "Blu Ray" Disc with 25GB storage. It is not a true Blu Ray disc. But Nintendo own creation.

Vickman mate I just want to mention that the improvement in disc reading speed is the fault of the drive which reads it, as opposed to the disc itself.
In 2006 when the PS3 came out Blu Ray was an emerging technology, and read speed was a real issue.PS3 usesonly a 2x Blu-Ray reader.

Yeah, it's a proprietary format that uses blue lasers, I believe... but Blu-Ray is a brand name that requires licensing. Rather than use the brand name and pay the accompanying fees, they made their own comparable high-capacity format. That's why it can't, for instance, play Blu-Ray movies... but I already have a Blu-Ray player, so I'm glad Nintendo made this decision in the end. It would have driven prices up for something that a lot of people already have between PS3s and standalone Blu-Ray players.[QUOTE="jaypakavelya"]does it mean that they have a hard surface and will be hard to scratch like the ps3's ones ?ghstbstr
Anyone know the answer to this question?
Indeed, the discs have a protective coating like the PS3's.
They are called iDensity discs. They are similar to Blu-ray but just a proprietary version of Blu-ray.

Modified Blu-Ray.
With rounded edges ;)
I read from Nintendeverything.com that the rounded edges of the Wii U discs are intended to deter piracy. There had to be a reason for the discs' edges to be round, as Blu-Ray discs are not. It may not be an anti-piracy issue, but a way to diffiate Wii U discs from Blu-Ray discs (so Nintendo will not be sued by the Blu-Ray Association for having a disc format that is similar to Blu-Ray).

Right, that's what I said, modified. ;)
With no Blu-Ray movie Playback. ;) ;) :P
It's a nice trade off, no Blu-Ray movie playback, but sweet rounded edges!
