We could play on names all day; DS Advanced, DS Micro, DS Slim, Super Nintendo DS etc. One thing you have to consider is that Nintendo only releases products that are "Sturdy" and can withstand abuse. I doubt Nintendo would release a system so thin, it could crack with very little effort. Here's my opinion of what the next DS could offer:
1. No GBA Port:
As much as we'd like to believe that backwards compatibility is a "Must-Have" feature, I think Nintendo is ready to move towards the future. I expect a slot for original DS games on the bottom of the system, where the GBA port is now. Newer DS games will feature larger cartdriges (similar to compact flash size), and will have a new slot on the top of the system.
2. Slimmer System with simple, yet sleek aesthetics:
I don't expect the new DS to be as thin as the MacBook Air, but I think it will shave a few milimeters in thickness. By omitting the GBA slot, the cartdridges will not require the thickness of the current DS Lite.
3. Larger Screens with improved resolution, but the same brightness technology:
Nintendo has definately found a sweet spot with the brightness on their LCD screens. First with the Micro, then the updated GBA SP, and then with the DS Lite. Only bigger screens, or higher resolution could make an improvement, so this one is a no-brainer.
In the end, I'm sure Nintendo will include features such as the Microphone, but I also hope that the controls offer something new, and more innovative than the current setup. Only time will tell, but their choices in the past should give us some indication of what to expect.
