Because this world is full of completely unique people who all have different preferences, there will always be people who will think a certain game is the best Nintendo DS game while other's will think that it's a horrible game. IMHO, there isn't a defining one yet. My 2 fav's so far are Mario Kart DS, because it has good graphics and I love the new tracks from it. BUT, it's not near as fast nor as many powerups and turns as Double Dash on the GC.... my other favorite would be NSMB, because it looks SOO cool, and is fun while it lasts, it's just not very long.
come to think of it, with the online play with Mario Kart, i would have to go with Mario Kart DS for now.
For me its a tie for three games. Advance Wars: Dual Strike is a great turn based strategy, Metroid Prime: Hunters is a brilliant fps on the DS and Final Fantasy 3 is classic rpg gaming fun.

Let's face it, there is no "one best Nintendo DS game" But what if their was....A perefect game! so great, and extraordinary that it appelead to everyone. A mix of everything,something with such uniqueness you could be lost in the game for hours, days, years and forever! It intrest people who hated videogames before but not anymore. So perfect that it drove the whole world insane over a game. People would say they wouldn't like it but as soon as the picked it up they couldn't stop. It drove the earth crazy, who could complete the never ending game first! it was a competition, once it got out of hand people just started doing anything in real life to stop their neighbors, friends, faimly, enemys for completing it first. Even if it ment death! The world would come to an end, all because of this non real game, that was soooo perfect. Just think about it..... Would you really want a perfect game?

the only thing that stops me from playing it is that it is in japanese. im not too into anime anymore (used to be) but its just the kinda game we need to stop people from always whining about no smash bros ds. if it ever comes out in english, i will buy it.
IMO Tony Hawk's American Sk8land is the best. To bad the online is basically dead, but even single player is great. But once LoZ: PH comes out that will most likely become my favorite, atleast i hope so...

i would recommend you try it any ways as it is my favorite ds game of all time, maybe favorite game of all time. it probly wont come to usa because of copy right stuff and taht most of the mangas in the game r unknown to americans
I'd personally go for the Phoenix Wright series (the first and third in particular) for the detective genre, Jump! Ultimate Stars as the fighting genre, and Mario Kart as the racing genre, the best in their own categories. For roleplaying, there's nothing really AAA for me, and for puzzles, Picross and Puzzle Quest are tied.
I am currently DS-LESS (thats until next wednesday when I get paid, LOL) and I chose what I think are the top 4 ds games (just my opinion, could be wrong)
Well, while I do have some favourite games (Advance Wars, Castlevania, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright, Starfox Command) there is not an ideal DS game yet. Except for being a matter of taste, it's also a matter that all those games are flawed in one way or another. You can say one game (any game). It will be flawed. It's not like the case with Gamecube or Gameboy Advance where you could just say Resident Evil 4 and Advace Wars 2 and the matter was resolved in seconds. There has yet to be fantastic showcase of the DS. For every game with unique control or gameplay, it might not be so great on graphics, length or replayability (Trauma Center). For every game with length or replayability (Advance Wars), there is absolutely nothing unique with it, thus not justifying its existence on the DS. For every game with great graphics and control (Metroid Prime), there is always gonna be a disappoiting and short single player. Even the almighty Mario Kart doesn't use the DS's capabilities in full (Where is the stylus? I don't want to imply that we should be playing Mario Kart with stylus, it's just that the game doesn't do anything that hasn't been seen before with the exception of the online and the map, but these aren't exactly innovations). There is no ideal DS game yet, but, there might be one in the face and shape of either The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass or Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. Those games have great graphics coupled with great control. The question is: Will they have great length and replayability or will they ultimately have to suffer somewhere? We'll see. The DS has still a lot of life inside it.
