[QUOTE="FunWithMatches"]I'm a huge, huge fan of Advance Wars. It was one of the first games i picked up for the GBA when it first came out (man I miss that rectangle) and I played it honestly for hours at a time. My friends and I would duke it out with the cables and make our own D-Day maps and try and create impossible mazes full of heavy tanks and missile units. That's my main problem with this game. I love the switch from 2d strategy to the 3d world, but the complete lack of strategy and customization just doesn't put it up to par. I mean advance wars DS made me go out and buy a Lite just to play that game, only to beat it 3 times through then sell it all off 100% satisfied. So far I'm enjoying this one far more than the first battalion wars. The controls are much more intuitive and the tutorials actually teach you how to play the game. I kind of wish they did this game from the top down perspective like advance wars, then shift to the 3d combat when you move units or battalions into combat. That way you get the strategy aspect mixed with some kick-ass 3d action. It's a fun game, one of my favorites on the Wii thus far, but it doesn't have the stomping power of its little brother in my book. Also, and this is a big also....NO FREAKIN CO-OP. I mean how hard is it to put a line down the middle of a screen and allow two people to fight against each other? They could have done capture the flag, defend and attack, or even had mini scenarios where a small, pretty much pointless story is set up about one battalion fighting off another one for 20 minutes until reinforcements arrive. ANYTHING like that would have made this game the must own AAA title that it could have been. Advance wars was all about strategy and fighting against your friends. This series just hasn't seemed to figure that out. Sure there's online and if my interent at my university would work, it may answer that question, but all in all I just wish there was something to do with my roommates.dieworm
Wow dude first off, use the enter button. Secondly, I love AW. But I also recognize that BW is NOT a strategy game. It's a tactical squad based, 3rd person shooter hybrid. I think people are quick to label it as a strategy game because it was originally an Advance Wars game and is still part of the Wars series. If you don't look at it as a strategy game but an action game instead, you will like it more... just like if you look at Metroid Prime as a FPS you will most likely hate it...it's something else.
Ha, well when you start typing you just keep going, but this time i'll even indent in, just for you ( ;. Besides, I get enough of that from my profs, but onto your post, I understand your point, but I also think I'm allowed to post my opinion. Next, AW is known as strategy. They played the original BW as a mix of the two. BWii also played the game up as being a mix of both. Now I still love the BW games sincethey remind me of AW, I'm just trying to look into why this game maybe "flopped". For the hype this game got, especially with the forum posts and unions, there isn't a very big "WOW" reaction. I'm just voicing my opinion as to why the game was a flop in my book: mainly because with the wii controls, and the ads, they play it up as being a strategy game. (here, let me press enter for you)
The reason AW sells is because its about strategy and they attempted to grab those players and bring them over to BW. With 3rd person action games, strategy is big part of that. Look at GRAW,R6V, two games that play up as beingshooters with squads that both involve afair amount of strategy. Look at AW now, a strategy game that focuses primarily on tactics and brain power. Now, when you'rebranching off from a "strategy" genre that is know primarily for that reason, you NEED to keep some of that in to appeal to your base fans... otherwise you run the risk of alienating them. I like how you use the word "tactical" in your description. Tactics, Strategy... see, they even got you hooked in with the advertising. I love the game, I enjoy the action, the quirky story and commanders, but again, for the last time, I brain barely had to go into overdrive.
