No, you 100% don't need a SD card. But SNES/N64/Some Genesis games need either the Classic Controller or a Gamecube controller. But for NES/Turbografx/Some genesis, the only thing you need more then what comes packaged is a internet connection :P
Edit: All VC games, will tell you before you buy them, which controller they need.
