About a month or two ago, my DS Lite got a hinge crack on the far left side, it's only a little hairline crack, barely noticeable, less than a quarter of an inch, I just wanted to know how to stop it from growing, is it just not bending the top screen back to the third click?

I got it last summer, so is it still good for warranty, should I call Nintendo?

MIne was that way for about a 4 months then the hinge completely broke off. don' relax! Don't relax! ANyways, if possible, unless you get really annoyed, don't even open it up to the first click.

I have had mine with a hinge crack for 7 months and nothing has happened yet. Besides, if something does happen it will give me more of a reason to switch to an black DS.

There's not much you can do to prevent it, but it doesn't effect the DS at all when it does happen, it just looks annoying.

and if the hairline crack turns into a huge crack like it did on my DS, just replace it with a new case

I suggest that you fix it up. The same thing happened to my Lite and it eventually broke off and now I can tear the top screen off of the left hinge:( It took a year to happen, though so you may not need to get it repaired right away. Now I'm stuck playing my sister's pink DS.
