I was just curious as to what you guys think? Is the Wii about to be old news?? Nintendo never once said the Wii would be a 10 year lifespan and 2011 will be the end of the Wii's 5 year lifespan. Do you think we will see another Nintendo console and what do you think could be in it? We gonna see another graphic starved system that relies on gameplay or a console that doesn't skimp on anything? Does the Wii live on and have a full long 10 year life? Anyone have any answers or opinions to these questions?

10 year life span, I doubt it very much. I don't know when it going to come out, but for the people who think that the next Nintendo system is going to be just like a Wii but with HD graphics they need to think again. A system like that might as well just be a PS3 with a wand. I expect great things from Nintendo. Revolutionary things.

no chance, maybe if your a serious gamer but anyone into casual gaming or who has kids it still has mass appeal.Probably for the vary reasons that these questions are being asked, great to come in from work and just put a game on for half an hour or so, or maybe a quick game with the kids.Great to play online when everybody in our house has gone to bed and it's free. I think if i bought a console for myself it would have been the xbox360 , but i bought it for my 9yr old and with a view for everyone to use and that seems to be where the wii's strengths are.As for the playstation3 they just released the slimline version so where next, great graphics and gameplay but far too expensive(do you really need a bluray player) and you cannot play your ps2 games on the basic console, ie the version most kids would end up with for christmas.I reckon the wii has a little more life in it yet.

Im just trying to get a straight look at what to expect, which after being a Nintendo fan for so long i should know not to expect anything cause they will most likely blow anything i expect out of the water...The reasoning behind all this is cause the Wii was made out to be something it wasn't (in the beginning and imo) so i dont wanna get excited or reserve money to get it. So do you honestly think the Wii will actually live longer than 5 years? Should we expect glimpses of its new console in 2010?

I say no, as the Wii still hasn't been pushed to the max by a lot of games, which is why I'm eagerly awaiting Zelda Wii and Galaxy 2. Not to mention that a few franchises, such as F-Zero, Star Fox and Pikmin, still haven't had a Wii sequel, while especially the latter 2 could benefit greatly from the Wii's technology, control-wise.

No because Nintedo's handheld consoles are usually have the same lifespan as it's video game consoles only replaced two years earlier but the DS hasn't been replaced by anything yet. In addition this is a blitz of first party games coming out next year for the Wii which makes it a bad time to announce another console because it would promote holdouts not to mention the bad economy.

I understand ur desire to see those games in action on the wii but what if the new Nintendo console could offer so much more in both catigories of gameplay and visuals wouldnt u rather see them on like that than on the current wii?

It's pointless because many if not all of the Wii's peripherals hasn't been pushed or used in full.

They held out so long on the twilight princess that it became a wii title. what makes u think they wont do the same. knowing nintendo wont settle for less than perfection with there flagship titles. the poor economy has had almost no effect on the gaming industry. Oh and as for the DS it has been remade 3 times and is due for a 4th itteration. It just looks to me that we should be expecting it.

The poor economy has almost every effect on the gaming industry because like every other industry it must make money. A forth iteration has already been released but that doesn't mean a new console is coming out because a new handheld generation didn't start.

With the world at a stand still, we wont see any new consoles until 2012 or later. Even ps and xbox still have alot they plan on getting out of their consoles b4 moving onto a new one. They have motion and 3d stuff coming. Wii is not as far behind tech wise as it gets credit for. Devs will utilize the Wiis functions more and more over the next few years. i hope they dont make a Wii.2 that is nothing but a high def upgrade. it would be a waste of money and i wouldnt get it. in 3-4 years when PS4 and a new nintendo console comes out that is upgraded again, then i might be getting it. (one if it is %100 backwards cabable)

No, I think 2011 is a bit early since the wii is still selling well and Nintendo is giving it much more 1st party support it seems then they did in most of this year. I finally decided to but one because with the games coming out next year(plus amazon had a lot of games priced down this weekend) I decided it was worth it. I think the wii won't last 10 years though because Nintendo will want to step up to HD I think, so late 2012 might be realistic.

Rare owns Star Fox and Microsoft owns Rare, so unless Miscrosoft allows Rare to make a new game for the wii forget about playing a new sf, dk, conker or pd game on a nintendo system (other than ds).

WTF? Star Fox Rare?? get your Facts Straight buddy Star Fox is Nintendo.

I think there will be support for it in 10 years but it won't be Nintendo's longest running game system.

Once it's relevance in the industry runs out, or there's some major changes Nintendo wants to implement, it'll be time for a new console. So far, I highly doubt it's coming to an end when some of its biggest titles are yet to come out.

that's not the problem. the problem is that he said STARFOX IS OWNED BY RARE. WTF?!?!? it's like saying "retro owns metroid". rare doesn't own starfox because of SF64 and adventures, nor it owns donkey kong because of the DKC games. team ace doesn't own starfox because of assault and retro doesn't own metroid because of the prime games.

I wouldnt count on it surviving and still selling after 10 years. Nintendo will probably announce a new console in the next two years and release it in the next four(or not xD). Although I do hope that their next console wont have much more graphic and processing power. Its what makes nintendo so great - not relying on power, but gameplay. A nintendo console as strong as the next PS or Xbox just wouldnt feel right.

Still, im never selling my Wii. What they done with backward compatibility is superb!

Yeah, Nintendo owns most of the characters and game series, Rare was just a developer for Nintendo, but now isnt anymore cause Microsoft bought Rare, but that doesnt mean Nintendo cant order a new star fox game from another developer like Namco or even treir own dev team(Nintendo EAD).

Wii will be out as long as it still sells.... so if people keep on buying it, it could last 10 years. Look at the NES and how long that was in production. Just because the Wiiwill one day besurpassed bynewer, more powerful console... doesn't mean it it's just going to disappear.

Can you imagine how much they sell if the price was eventually dropped to $99?

Again, when it slows..... that's when we'll see what's next on Nintendo's roster.

Plus.... look at the way they've just been perfecting consoles, and making minor improvements with their systems lately. The DS is more easier to do so because of it's size, but I still think the next console will be an update. They don't have to spend mass amounts of money, and people would still eat it up. The only thing that I could see forcing Nintendo into a quicker console release is if Sony or M$' motion tech flys off the shelves. Nintendo would in turn have to respond.

They aren't in that situation

i'm thinking 2011 but maybe early 2012

esspecially if 2011 is weak as far as first party games go

if Wii's 2011 is anything like GCN's 2005 or 2006, then 2011/12 will be the end

IDK It just seems to be the next logical thing for Nintendo to do is bring out there next console around 2011. I mean look November saw the lowest Wii sales yet. I just dont see the sales continuing to be where Nintendo wants em. I guess we'll just have to see...but what can Nintendo do with there next console? Will there be HD does Nintendo think thats important yet? What about there online? There is obvious issues that we would like to see changed but what do u think Nintendo will focus on?

No.

Rare was licensed to make some 2nd party games for Nintendo before they were purchased by Microsoft. Nintendo still owns the rights to Donkey Kong & Star Fox. Just because Rare made some game for Nintendo doesn't mean that ownership was transferred.

The rights to Donkey Kong and Star Fox were retained by Nintendo.

You are right about Conker's Bad Fur day, though. As an original Rare creation, the rights to Conker's were retained by Rare.

Don't worry the Wii's going to be around for quite some time still, at least 2013 until Nintendo releases a new console.

I hope not. I really enjoy playing games on the Wii, especially SmackDown vs Raw 2009. The Wii got me into playing console video games on a regular basis. So for me, I don't see an end to my fun any time soon. :)

The Wii has been out for 3 years, and just barely started its 4th year. The very, very earliest we'll see the next Nintendo console is Q4 2011, and that's not for another 2 years. Could be longer. Stop thinking about a future that Nintendo hasn't even scratched the surface on in annoucing the newest console. Just enjoy the now.

The wii has its fun moments but it doesnt have that long lasting entertainment that some of these others game have due to online multiplayer and I am BIG fan of Nintendo and i just wanna see them strike gold with that one online game. Its hard to do that on the wii. I still expect some rumors to come about the next nintendo this next year. Then see the console at E3 and then get our hands on it 2011.

[QUOTE="wiifan001"]The Wii has been out for 3 years, and just barely started its 4th year. The very, very earliest we'll see the next Nintendo console is Q4 2011, and that's not for another 2 years. Could be longer. Stop thinking about a future that Nintendo hasn't even scratched the surface on in annoucing the newest console. Just enjoy the now.

Shouldn't they be developing the next console now though? It takes a long time to even design a new console.

There is obvious issues that we would like to see changed but what do u think Nintendo will focus on?

lol you've been reading gamespot stories. Well let me break it down for you, whoever writes those stories is a moron. In November the Wii outsold both the PS3 and 360, even though MW2 released in November. Over the Thanksgiving Weekend it outsold them both. Of course sales are down from previous years, thats because a bunch of people bought one last year. Did you buy a Wii one year and then went out and bought it again? Of course not. Also the way the Wii was selling in its first few years, sales HAD to decrease at some point. And of course the economy has greatly effected the game industry, what do you think all the closing studio's and layoffs are about?

Also as usual people seem to be really confused about what a 10yr or 8yr or whatever lifespan means. That means that the console will be supported with any software, so basically it will see things Madden and music games and Tony Hawk or whatever. Its not like the console will still be seeing high profile AAA exclusives or anything like that, nor does it mean another console wont come out for 10yrs. The said the PS2 had a 10yr life cycle like 2yrsAFTER the PS3 came out, only because games could be ported from the Wii.

Lastly Nintendo has a slew of blockbuster franchise due out next year and possibly into 2011 and as we know, all Nintendo games have legs. Their not going to release Zelda Wii and then six months later bring out a new console, they want to maximize sells. Its a big reason why I believe they will get it out next year. I don't see a new console coming any earlier than 2012 and that also depends on whether or not the economy has begun to rebound. Oh and lol at the person who said Rare and therefore Microsoft owns Star Fox, I seen people get it wrong before but thats just insane.

I don't know. I hope there's life left in the Wii, and I think there still is. I don't know if you've played anything with the MotionPlus accessory, but I did recently, and was blown away. I played a little of Wii Sports Resort, and was amazed by what I saw/played. It wasn't so much for any of the games on that disk itself, though I did enjoy them (especially the Swordplay, Table Tennis, and Golf), but more because of what is now possible with the Wii. Seriously. I think there will be a whole new wave of developers flocking to the Wii with the MotionPlus now available. The level of control and immersion possible in Wii games is now far, far beyond what it used to be. I am eagerly looking forward to the release of 1) the next Zelda for the Wii, 2) any sort of Star Wars game with lightsabers, 3) Red Steel 2 (I had fun with the first one), and 4) any other game which uses the MotionPlus in a new, creative way. And there is a lot of opportunity for that.

Nintendo could just incorporate the MotionPlus into the next console, but the Wii IS still selling well. 1.5 million units were sold the week of Thanksgiving.

So, I think there's life left in the Wii.

Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. I don't know. Either way, nothing has been said what's after the wii, when and what. Isn't the Wii keeping you from even thinking of the next gen anyway? I mean there's a massive, massive load of stuff to be overlooking from what's out now and the upcoming wii titles in the next few months.

they've been working on the "new console" since before the wii was out. doesn't mean they didn't scratch everything and start again in the meantime, but they definitely are working on it. hell, it may be done, waiting for a good opportunity to be announced, getting updated while it's not out. but it's definitely in the works.

That's just it though. We don't know anything regarding the new details of the console and when. So in the mean time, just have to think about the next year or two at most with software lineup. It's not like the Wii will get anything it doesn't need that many THINKS it needs- Blu-ray, WiiHD, achievement system, etc.

i just wanted to point out they were working on it, but that didn't mean it would be released soon :P

MadSavage22
yes, im sure its coming at 2011, before wii decline is too strong-Remember this is key-nintendo cant allow wii to drop in popularity too hard before launching new hardware-it must be fresh in gamers awareness. And im sure nintendo will be a bit more careful with the power of the console this time, as it did costed them some market share. Im not saying it will be the focus, just that ninty will cover that base alright. Its feature WILL BE NEW gameplay, but the graphics will be top notch(like cube, n64 etc) to compete in a healthier way. Im not sounding optimistic ,just logical, as nintendo tries to be usually.

Wouldn't the end of 2010 be it's 4th year?
