It is a pretty decent web browser and it is fun to use when you don't feel like using your computer. It has its limitations though, so be mindful of that.
I got the Internet Channel when the computer I was using had messed up and I couldn't get it fixed for a few months. I still use it here and there when I'm bored or want to look something up really quick (Like a game strategy or something).
And $1 USD = 100 Wii Points (And soon to be Nintendo Points). The Points Cards (as far as I know) only come in a $20 amount (meaning 2000 points). But, if you have a credit/debit/Visa gift card, you can buy $10, $20, $30, $40, or $50 amounts on the Wii Shop Channel.
I use it now and then to check local radar/weather and such, when I don't want to boot up a PC [or get the laptop + startup]. As we've got two screens near each other, I'll use it now and then when watching TV.
It's useful, for what it is. I by far prefer to really surf @ PC.
I think it was still free when I got it.
I suppose if you lack the computers to keep everyone's online experience satisfied or something like that, the online channel could have its purpose. It takes some getting used to, as I've noticed when I saw someone else using it, but hey, it's there if you need it. :P
To be honest, no I don't think its 500pts (5$). I got it when it was free, and I enjoyed because it was free. I don't think its worth $5, sorry. Kind of dumb that Nintendo is charging points for a web browser, but whatever.
