Sonic Boom Announced For Wii U & 3DS

The Nintendo/SEGA partnership with Sonic continues with Sonic Boom.

Sega has announced Sonic Boom, which it describes as "a new branch of the Sonic universe" encompassing a video game, new CG-animated TV series, and a range of toys. The game is launching this year for Wii U and 3DS.

Sonic Boom will be the third and final game released exclusively on Nintendo platforms, after the two companies signed a deal last year. The Wii U version of the game is being produced by new developer Big Red Button Entertainment, with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time developer Sanzaru Games handling the 3DS version.

Sega says the game will feature traditional Sonic elements (speed) alongside exploration, combat, and a tethering mechanic. Sonic Boom, or at least the Wii U version, appears to be designed around 4-player cooperative play.

We spoke with a Sega producer about Sonic Boom, who said you shouldn't think of it as a Skylanders-style game because the toys don't integrate into the game like they do in Activision's title.

Frost also explained that the 3DS version is not a straight port of the Wii U iteration and that the game overall is similar in structure to Sonic Adventure, in that it'll feature a main hub and missions branching off that.

The gameplay actually looks pretty good. The character models need work though. Remove all the mummy wrappings from everyone except Knuckles. Tails design actually isn't that bad though.

What I find interesting though is that it's running on CryEngine 3.

the trailer does not look impressive. i hope i am wrong but this looks even worste than sonic lost world.

nintendo wasted 3 exclsuive with sega i would rather have yakuza, house of dead and phantasy start online.

tails and amy look good but what's up with sonic and knuckle's design? they look terrible, especially sonic.

its about time the characters got updated imo..

it looks like effort was actually put in to this....not enough gameplay yet but looks like it will be an adventure game like starfox adventures...

every game is a cash grab to make money also.

That looks terrible. Why aren't they making Sonic Generations 2? Sega finally found a winning formula for a great Sonic game with Sonic Generations and then they through it out the window to make crappy games like Lost World and this.

They need to make new content before they can remix it 20 years from now.

I actually really liked Sonic Lost World, so here's to hoping this one's fun too. You can never really get excited for a Sonic game until it's done and out on shelves, when you can find out if it's a decent entry or the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog.

It looks really pretty and the gameplay looks solid and varied. I don't know why everyone is so down on this.

But I guess that's a good sign. The usual cycle is for people to be excited after a launch trailer, then that excitement degenerates to repulsion as more info gets out. Maybe it'll be the opposite this time.

To me, it looks like all the other Sonic games that everybody hates.

I just don't care for the franchise.

Everyday must be upper body day for Knuckles.

You know a Sonic game is bad when Amy is a playable character.
And I don't like the designs of the characters nor the freekin dubstep.

I think Nintendo is prepping to buy Sega.

I'll just wait to see what Sonic team does next. Hopefully they produce some Sonic Rush and Generations level material.

I think it could be interesting and good. Gonna wait to see more information before really judging it. Give Sega credit for trying to reboot a dieing franchise.

It looks like Sonic and friends are ready for another fun adventure.

Sonic Lost World had the story what Sonic should have. A threat to robotized critters, characters, (and certainly humans if they go back to the alternate version of Earth) as Sonic busts them out.

But, that's my opinion to Sonic Team. Maybe if this has a good story, I might be impress.

For those who don't know about this, Big Red Button Entertainment (made of ex-Naughty Dog staff) are gonna use the CryEngine 3 in the Wii U version of Sonic Boom. The details in the work in progress look extremely beautiful and colorful. The characters designs look completely different and unique. The funniest part are the characters paying homage to Sony's franchise characters-- Sonic as Nathan Drake, Knuckles as Crash Bandicoot (before it moves to Activision), Tails as either Clank or Daxter, and Amy Rose as the gymnastic version of either Ratchet or Jak.

Anyway, I'll be looking forward to purchase Sonic Boom when it launches for the U (and 3DS/2DS)... not only to support SEGA or the Sonic franchise, but to also support BRBE and hope they'll continue making more games for Nintendo systems (including systems from Sony and Microsoft).

WTF did they do to Sonic and Knuckles? It looks like a horrible accident happened in development where some of the characters skeletons from smash bros. somehow managed to get inside the characters in this Sonic game and someone at Sega said "Hmmm....that's not such a bad idea! Let's do it! A modified model of Donkey Kong for Knuckles and Captain Falcon for Sonic!"....-_-

The more I read about Sonic Boom, the more hope I have for it. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.
