Someone recommened I start with Zero mission but my options are

1. Play the original version on 3ds

2. Buy a ds lite/gba sp and the game

3.buy a wii u and the game

Which sound best? I was also considering buying samus returns.

i adore the NES one. it's my favourite metroid. the music the atmosphere, the exploration. difficulty is just at the point of not cursing the screen.
however if i had never played it as a kid and tried it today i would probably be like " this shit is too confusing"
zero mission might be better for the new generation because it simplifies things a little and brings things more up to date.

samus returns is great. not the challenge of the original on gameboy but a fun up to date experience.

if you dont have a gameboy or wiiU. then get the original on 3DS. dont pay 200$ for a 1MB file lol...hint free on PC...hint..

Vanilla versions of Metroid 1 and 2 don't hold up that well. The series wasn't that good before Super Metroid. I'd say get Samus Returns since you already have a 3DS. A used copy of Zero Mission on GBA will cost you just as much as that. But if you have a New 3DS, then download Super Metroid.

I would only recommend buying a Wii U if you decide you like the series so much you must have Zero Mission, Super, Fusion and the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

If you're gonna play the Metroid series for the first time I would start with Super Metroid. Just get an SNES Classic and play it on that.

Don't forget Metroid Prime. One of the best games ever made.
