wait a minute... People donated a ton of money so thet they could get melee into evo and now they won't get to see it happen. I bet a lot of people are going to be furious with this.
I don't think I've hated Nintendo more
Nintendo, this is an opportunity to appeal to the CORE you want to buy the Wii U, and this will help promote future Smash Bros games.
There is literally a new Smash Bros Game coming to 3DS and Wii U, this could affect the popularity of the series if future EVO tourney's remove the Smash Bros games from the selection of fan faves.
NINTENDO, this is FREE Advertising for your brand, your characters, your Smash Bros. Franchise...take it and get on the "Core's" good side!

Nintendo didn't miscommunicate, they were direct: "Regrettably, weve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee for Evo 2013."
This mentality follows suit with Nintendo's recent Youtube video policies, and their longstanding demo disc policies.
Nintendo changed their mind for Evo though, thank goodness.

i don't get what reason nintendo would have to forbid it from happening in the first place. it's literally free advertisement FOR THE GAME THEY JUST ANNOUNCED. it's the biggest event in the fighting game community, and smash is in it. hell, even if it was some minor tourney with no-names, what reason would nintendo have to keep them from streaming? what could they possibly benefit from it? and yes i know they decided it will be allowed now, but i don't understand. i just don't.BrunoBRS

I can't get over how ironic this situation is. Many people in the FGC hated Smash to begin with so it was already confusing on why that game even entered EVO and when Nintendo blocks it, a s***storm commences? Make up your minds. Do you love Smash or hate it?nintendoboy16
Smash was voted in by a charity drive. There was a list of fighting games that weren't going to be in Evo 2013 and the general public voted on which game they'd like to see at evo with their money. Smash earned a rediculous amount of money. I believe it was almost $95,000. A lot of people paid money to see smash at evo so they'd be the ones that were angry about it not being streamed.

I know how it was voted in through donations, but ironic regardless. In fact, it makes things even worse, not just for Ninty's reputation, but the rep of the FGC as well, considering, as I said before, have HATED Smash since Day 1.Nintendo didn't miscommunicate, they were direct: "Regrettably, weve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Nintendo's legal department jumped the gun. Simple as that. Everyone was quick to jump down Nintendo's throat about it, and now gamers feel entitled that their voices were what caused Nintendo to change their tune.

Thanks for posting that on July 9th on Page one! :P
The decision was reversed

Nintendo changed their mind yet again?! Reversing their reversal of their original poor decision?:o
Geez, they should make up their mind for Smash Streaming...:(
Also, a link yesterday on page one was already posted that it was reversed, so the above post is joking about a reversal of the reversed decision earlier.

Haha, it's all in fun mate. I'm just happy all is well and peeps be happy. :P
Guess I've been out the loop for awhile, why is there such a big deal being made about Melee? Why would Nintendo care if its streamed and why do people care so much to see it streamed? For a second, I thought this was about the new Smash game since people keep bringing up free advertisement. Melee really isn't going to advertise the new game.Sepewrath
I believe their point is that it draws more attention to the series as a whole, rather than a specific game. Of course, the majority of people who watch it will be gamers who already know about it anyway.

Not so fast.
According to the EVO founder and Gamespot.com those gamer voices were Exactly what caused Nintendo to change their tune. As a matter of fact, Nintendo wanted to cancel the Melee event entirely.
Not surprising, but here's the link on the Original Nintendo response to Melee:

Nintendo wanted to shut down EVO Super Smash Tournament
----
"EVO founder Joey Cuellar says Nintendo not only wanted to deny Smash Bros. streaming, but also the event itself."
"Earlier this week, Nintendo tried to deny the organizers of the Evolution Fighting Game Championships the rights to broadcast the Super Smash Bros. Melee, a decision that was later reversed after community backlash. EVO founder Joey Cuellar told competitive gaming and eSports show Live On Three, hosted by GameSpots Rod Breslau and Twitchs Marcus Graham, that Nintendo also tried to shut down tournament itself.
"They were trying to not only shut down the stream, but shut down the event, the Smash portion," Cuellar said on the show. "It's their IP, they can do what they want. They didn't present us any option to keep it open. We tried to wig-wam our way through it, and they were fine with just shutting down the streaming portion of the event."
Fans were upset about Super Smash Bros. Melee's removal from the stream schedule earlier today, particularly after supporters helped raise almost $95,000 for charity earlier this year to see the game included in the tournament.
Within hours of Nintendos decision to shut down the stream, fans worldwide of the fighting game community and competitive gaming community made their voices heard, trending #FreeMelee on Twitter and earning the #1 story overall on Reddit. Cuellar says that the community alone is what got the Smash Bros. stream back on.
"We did nothing on our end. It had to been the bad PR they were getting in conjunction with the power of the Internet. We're grateful to everyone that contributed to making Nintendo make a great decision for the fans worldwide."

Generalizations don't work when describing such a diverse group of gamers.

For one, I am glad I'm not considered part of the community (even though I do like the genre a lot) because most of who I've talked to on other sites (haven't had too many problems on this site) that consider them part of it come off as unlikeable. You're considered a "scrub" for some of the stupidest crap I've ever heard.

Now we have "anime fighters" being a confused term? Licensed titles are usually what comes to mind as they are, well generally based on anime (Dragon Ball Z being a major example due to how many fighters it has in that franchise, like Budokai, Budokai Tenkaichi, Burst Limit, Super Butouden, Hyper Dimension, Super Sonic Warriors, and even from smaller examples like Inuyasha, Zatch Bell, and Yu Yu Hakusho). Usually games with an anime styIe (like what you mentioned above), they're affiliated with something else.Okay, fair enough on the commentators. But how about that debate I mentioned?

that debate is completely irrelevant. its like the jrpg/wrpg naming mechanics, just semantics.[QUOTE="nintendoboy16"]Now we have "anime fighters" being a confused term? that debate is completely irrelevant. its like the jrpg/wrpg naming mechanics, just semantics. Not really when the debate is going on between the Smash and the other parts of the FGC, and in a sense, it does go into that community's stance on the series. Please Log In to post.
