They say nostalgia sells, but rarely does it sell this well. It would appear thatThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3Dis a huge hit, with modern gamers apparently itching to get their hands on a prettier version of a thirteen-year-old game. I can hardly blame them.

The game is currentlyAmazon.com's top selleracross all videogame software, hardware and peripherals. It has also reached second place in the United Kingdom sales charts after releasing in the country this Friday. Although it's not first place, this is relatively huge news -- I don't even think I could use up one hand by counting the number of DS/DSi games that ever made it to number two, and considering this is the less widespread 3DS platform, that is a huge achievement.

Compacting this are anecdotal reports around the Web thatOcarina of Time 3Dhas sold out in several US locations, as well as the entirety of Japan. Our own associate editor Jonathan Holmeshas reportedthat his local GameStop and the two Target stores he visited were completely out of copies. It's possible Nintendo undershipped copies to manufacture hype, but it seems to be doing the trick!

Yes, it's a polished port of a thirteen-year-old game, but it seems that, more than a decade on,The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timeis still one of the most influential and respected titles in the world. I am okay with that.

Destructoid

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D is a huge success and the 3DS' first big hit. People are finding it hard to buy copies at various retailers, and even on sites like Amazon. It's amazing to see a decade old game still find its relevancy in todays' times, hopefully this will indicate an upward trend in 3DS sales.

Luckily I went first thing Sunday morning to pick up both OoT and a 3DS. The game totally deserves to be completely sold out though, it's quite amazing.

Nintendo is afraid of overstocking stores like they did with Spirit Tracks.

I hope they keep a steady flow of copies going into stores, it'd be a shame if people couldn't buy it and in turn buy 3DSs because of it.

Let's hope Mercenaries does the same thing, it's looking pretty good.

But it worries me that Nintendo thinks OOT can carry the 3DS until Star Fox releases in September. Give us Kid Icarus already!

Only 150k copies were produced for the first shipment, this is no suprise...

Give it a week and they are going to release more due to demand.

I looked for it at Walmart on its release day, not to buy it but just to look at the cover, it was sold out. Not sure about our GameStop though.

My local BestBuy, Target, and Gamestop were all sold out. I had to go to Costco to get a copy, a place where I have never gone to buy a game before.

BB had plenty yesterday, and target next door had none. I also think because of the special deals that are offering is helping the sale.

It was completely sold out at Target when i went to get it on Sunday, according to one of the Target people, the game sold out within the first two hours of the store being opened. Then I went to Gamestop on Monday and they had two remaining (behind the counter).

I understand that OoT deserves to do this well, but I feel that part of the reason is the lack of current worth-while titles, meaning lots of people chose this because it's the best they've got. Don't get me wrong, I would buy OoT over everything because it's my favorite game, but I'm just making a guess for everyone. If a Mario game or two were already released I doubt the sales would be nearly as good as they are.

Plentyn in stock here at Walmart and Target. I would imagine more were shipped to larger areas. The people having a hard time finding it live in smaller cities maybe?

Good to hear that it's selling well, it deserves it (even if there are way better Zelda games). Actually, at my local store I got THE LAST copy they had.

Which do you think are better than OoT? I would agree TLoZ (NES) is better, and I know some say LTTP is better. For me it's TLoZ > OoT > MM > LTTP > rest of them. I wasn't a huge fan of TP. There were some very good handheld Zelda's though.

sold out the first day at my local Gamestop (thankfully I preordered). A few customers tried to get a copy. There were 50 copies and 46 of them were pre ordered. So glad I made the choice to get the 3DS before and pre order OOT.

Yeah I agree. This is the first game on the system that's "system seller" quality. Sure most games for the 3DS are fairly good, but there was nothing to get people excited over. The purchase is a no-brainer for those of us who have been waiting on a real game to play for the system. I doubt their are really huge sellouts or anything as there probably aren't enough 3DS owners out there to buy all those games. Although it will probably become the number one selling game on the system pretty quickly and will have a huge attache rate.

If that list is correct I find it hilarious that the psp go only sold 55 units in all of japan! Maybe time for a price cut. . . .

Not where I live. When I went to get my copy at Wal-Mart, there were five left, and my purchase reduced it to four. It was still a small number, but they were there. Ocarina of Time 3D should've been expected to sell well, and I expect games like Mario Kart 3DS and Super Mario 3D will sell even better.

I agree with both of you, BUT you have to consider Street Fighter as the other "system seller" title for the 3DS.

I was expecting after 3ds sales were pretty low and there is lots of stock everywhere that OoT 3d would be about the same, at least for the first while.

It's a good game but I don't know if I'd consider it a system seller - there are already three separate revisions of a superior console version for people who are Street Fighter fans. The 3DS version really only appeals to people who don't own a 360 or PS3, or people who are really, really into Street Fighter. I think the game mostly benefited from being the best game available at launch - people bought it sort of by default because they wanted a 3DS and a game and the other options were mostly terrible.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one on here that finds Zelda 1 to be the best in the series. Actually, switch MM and ALttP, and I would agree with everything you said. (with WW coming right after MM)
