How long do you think Nintendo has been thinking about the Wii U? 4 years? 5? More like since they began development on the DS. In fact, its an idea that organically could be created from the DS and existing technology. Now think about the Wii's consideration of making a console in HD. During the time of the Wii's development it was an obvious choice to make an HD console, all their competitors were doing it...then why didn't they do it? Cause they're f'ing money making geniuses.

Nintendo understood Sony and Microsoft's plans to make consoles that doubled the typical console lifespan (from 5yrs to 10yrs). For Sony and Microsoft it made sense because the cost of production would slowly decrease while consumption would slowly increase, making a longterm plan for steady profit. Nintendo had to clearly see this plan and decide to cut it in half in an attempt to outsell their competitors. Instead of making an HD console at high cost and waiting for longterm profits, i.e. the profits that Sony is only NOW beginning to see, they decided to hold off on an HD console until it was definitely profitable to produce, once again, RIGHT NOW. So basically what Nintendo did for the Wii was use technology from the last generation (GameCube) to produce a system with an innovative peripheral (Wiimote), which lets be honest, has been in development since Duckhunt, and they created a system that was at a very low cost to produce. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Sony put a lot of money into current gen technology and basically had to sit on their hands waiting for profits. Meanwhile Nintendo saw profits immediately as they marketed an "innovative" and inexpensive console for the whole family.

And now Nintendo is doing it again, introducing technology from the generation of 5 years ago with a new peripheral. But this time its gonna really hurt Sony and Microsoft. Because chances are, Nintendo is still going to develop at a 5 year cycle, and Sony and Microsoft are probably still dedicated to their initial 10 year lifecycle plan. How could they not? PC games are basically using the cutting edge of processing and graphics power nowadays and they're not significantly different from the current generation. So Microsoft and Sony don't really have anywhere dramatic to go as far as the next generation goes. And even if they did, they'd be in the same situation as 5 years ago: they'd be pouring money into cutting edge technologies and would be forced to sit around and wait 5 years for significant profits. At which time Nintendo jumps in again taking advantage of that generation's technology but with a different peripheral! Can Nintendo be stopped?

yea i see what nintendo did, ,,

they release wii knowing it was last gen tech ms and sony made mistake 1-going for 10 years with their hardware

so which means wii u has 2 and a half to 3 yrs ahead of them ,,

then when they finally pop out nintendo leap frogs them with in 2 yrs , so everything people have hoped for with 720 ps4 will not help

cause nintendo in the end will have their own more powerful console 2 yrs later at maybe cheaper price then these will probably launch at

and i garantee you theyll cost 500-600 and no one will buy them

not with a wii u that already has games and is goin to be 350 at most

Can Nintendo be stopped. Yes they can be.

Eventually Nintendo will be the cause of it's own demise. The Wii U is going to "only" sell 52 million in it's entire life span. Down from 86.2 Million (95-100 million wii sold)

The constant revisions each generation will eventually halt Nintendo in its tracks. Consumers will eventually catch on to Nintendo after they have gone to the well once to often.

But why would that halt them? Maybe that's what consumers want.

Hmm I don't know. Every 5 years you have 5 years of new gamers. If they keep up the quality of their titles they should be fine.

Okay then Megavideogame! What will consumers catch on to that will mess with Ninty's future consoles sales?

Anyway how do you know all this info about the sales of ninty's next console did you use a crystal ball to predict it?

It takes about 4 - 5 years to see profits from current gen technology due to high production costs. To see significant profits, Sony and Microsoft had to double their lifecycle to see steady longterm profits. Nintendo skipped this process and instead released last gen technology along with Sony and Microsoft since it was cheaper to produce, all the while waiting 5 years to produce a system with current gen technology. Thereby skipping that 5 year process where they'd have to wait for profits on their console.

Nintendo certainly is in a wierd position. Most gamers are mad at them for releasing a new console so early and having the Wii so underpowered. But from a business stand point, they essentially won this Gen by using last-Gen technology.

I don't Nintendo is releasing last-Gen technology again though, the graphically leap will be moreso than the PS2 to PS3. Also, remember that Sony essentially can't launch the PS4 until late 2013 at the earliest, because they are try to recoop their loses. Microsoft could throwa curveball and launch the XBOX 3 before that. But they are rumored to be agreeing with Sony to wait and launch later.

Also, the PS4 isn't going to be insanely more powerful than the PS3, because Graphics are hitting a wall, and Sony doesn't want another 10 year cycle.

Early? The Wii will be about six years old when the Wii U comes out, that's a full console life cycle. In fact from a technology standpoint, gaming hardware hangs around much longer than anything else. The only reason it seems short, is because the last two console cycles saw huge jumps in technology, that forced developers to play catch up for years. So these days it takes longer for games to hit their stride on new hardware, which makes console generations seem shorter than they really are.

Opening statement is wrong. They were thinking about this since the gameboy advance and Gamecube.

The cheaper system always has an inbuilt advantage - most buyers won't see a reason to buy the more expensive gaming console if the experiences are near enough (which they are). If technology mattered, the Lynx, the 3DO, the Jaguar, the Dreamcast, the Saturn would have been more successful. New technology doesn't matter to the average buyer. If you argue against this, you're probably not the average buyer.

While I do think the system sells extremely well, I don't think it has great third party support. Just no good games from devs outside Nintendo. Although, the Wii U seems a lot more friendly to developers than the original Wii did. I'm hoping for some good games outside of the already amazing Nintendo franchises that will bring me into getting this. The fact Arkham City and Battlefield 3 are gonna be on it gives me the impression this will be a far better generation than the last two for the Wii, if we're talking about quality games.
