If your gonna start with the DS than get Final Fantasy IV. One of the best in the series and a terrific remake. But, in general all the Final Fantasies are classics! Crystal Chronicals was meh and was more of spin off than an actual part of the series.

None of the final fantasies are cake walks really so in terms of difficulty you may have to grind to get passed certain levels. And IMO final fantasy kicks dragon quest in the nuts. (not saying to start a flame war)

Final Fantasy is a very traditional turn-based rpg like Dragon Quest. But it is much more thematic than Dragon Quest. Well at least the console ones are very thematic, the handheld ones not as much. The game you played on the Wii is a spin-off, and an action rpg. Its gameplay is nothing like the core Final Fantasy games. If you want to get started with one I recommend Final Fantasy IV. It is one of the best rpgs on the DS. I personally found this one easier than FF III, but all are manageable.

But if you like Dragon Quest games I recommend DQ IX over all FF games. If you haven't already played it I say go for it.

If you have a NDS, I recommend getting Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls first since its a remake of the first 2 final fantasy games.

Here's an example/demonstration of how the game is like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixhE0CPJDQ8&feature=share&list=PLgU0IdjAiGw7I52ZKVqGo8fum87df3D1Q

If you have a 3DS, get Final Fantasy III or Final Fantasy IV (NDS versions), FFIV mostly imo cause its one of the best FF games, I remember playing it (the original SNES version) back in the day when it first came out and it is what got me hooked into RPGs.

Crystal Chronicles series is a spinoff of the Final Fantasy series, and the only comparisons that I can think of to the original/mainline series is Chocobos and Moogles lol, not sure what other changes have been in placed since I barely played the Wii/DS versions. It is also a adventure/action RPG and not a turn based RPG like the mainline series (FF1-FF13).
