start at the beginning? pokemon red off the 3DS virtual console.

then you can play a newer one so you can see how much the series has changed.

Id start with the new ones, Moon or Sun. Theyre perfect for beginners to the series.

I'd recommend X or Y, because they feature many Pokemon from gens 1-6, and they were the first Pokemon games where all of the characters had three-dimensional character models rather than sprites. They were also pretty easy games, which is sort of a downside, but at the same time it makes them great for a beginner.

I would then also second KBFloyd in suggesting Pokemon Red or Blue. (Or Yellow.) The original R/B were beloved, memorable games and it really shows you ways the series has changed since the beginning.

At the beginning. Gives you a better perspective on the entire series when you see how it changes with each generation.

Honestly I didn't touch Pokemon forever, but I got Heart Gold on a DS Lite. Then played X after I got a 3DS (both can be played on 3DS).

Gold and Silver were the second gen after the original RBY. Heart Gold is like a remaster, and one of the best ones ever, and I found it a great game to reintroduce me back into the series, cause once you play X, the old ones feel older. However, I haven't touched Sun/Moon, Black/White or Sapphire/Ruby. I have Alpha Sapphire, but I'm finishing up X.

Why Heartgold over original? Because Red, Blue or Yellow were never remastered, while Heartgold got a modern DS update. Plus many of the things people remember from the cartoon are in that series. I'd play old ones just for story, and do your "collecting" with the 3DS releases like X, Alpha Sapphire and Sun.

Sun or Moon. Seriously there is no good reason to start with an early one unless you want to see how it changed. And you could watch a video to get an impression of that. Sun/Moon have a great set of Pokemon and very helpful features for a newcomer like me.

Read every sign you come across in its world and enjoy the better flow, challenges and graphics. I seriously enjoyed Sun/Moon and it is a very very lengthy game so I wouldn't worry about what you would play after it.

Actually R/B/Y were remastered on the GBA as FireRed and LeafGreen, also excellent choices. They differ a bit from the original versions of the games, in that some Pokemons' types have changed and they learn some revised movesets. There's also some newer content later on, and a few new features.

Watching a video does not convey the differences as well as playing does. Thats true for all video games.

Still say the originals. HG/SS are the best games though. You could at least start with Firered/Leafgreen since they are the remakes of R/B/Japanese Green.

@Ovirew: Were those FireRed and LeafGreen given modern upgrades? Cause honestly I haven't played the GBA era games, ever, nor know what the graphics look like. I do know the Heart Gold looks just as good as my DS games.

I never owned a GBA, and despite my DS lite having support, I never bought a game for it. Sapphire I bought on 3DS in the Alpha, and it looked better than Pokemon X.

Either the originals or the brand new ones. If you're okay with old school, I'd go do Yellow (Virtual Console) then Sun/Moon. If not, then go straight into Sun/Moon.

My personal favorite one is Heartgold/ Soulsilver, although they're pretty pricey these days. They're absolutely massive, have a lot of cool new features, and a pretty good atmosphere of adventure and discovery.

Sun and Moon are the games worth playing, they have all the updated mechanics, that the older games simply lack.

My first Pokémon game was X. It was Ok game, very very very easy and it has first gen Pokémon like Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Bulbasaur and so ... at least I knew a little bit what to expect.

I may be in the minority, but I say start with HG/SS. 2nd Gen just has this nice vibe and the remake of gold and silver is a great starting point for any new player in my opinion.

I like Pokemon Black. Its old and more classic. I would recommend you playing that. It has a good storyline.

@PCgameruk: Do not play anything before FR/LG as your first Pokemon game. A good place to start is Pokemon X/Y as they are the ideal game for beginners or maybe even Pokemon Platinum as it still holds up and in my opinion, it's better than any other Pokemon game released afterwards. It really depends on what you want. If you want a great pokemon experience, then buy Platinum. If you want to get into pokemon then buy X/Y. Hope this helps. Good luck

Start with the newest ones imho. Having played the all of the old ones, many won't have the same appeal they had back in the day. The newest, sun/moon is quite different, so playing x/y after that my be good for perspective.
