What?

So the game is launching incomplete?

Geez

If you have guys rip roaring to go put them in at launch, I don't like this new way of releasing games.

The DLC is optional so its not really incomplete.

And its only 2 dollars, so it doesnt really matter.

No, when one part of the game isn't in the game it's incomplete

I don't care about the 2 bucks, if that's even an issue someone picked the wrong hobby

I mind that it's coming after the game launches. He's ready to go right now but we have to wait.

I'm getting the Wii version. I want all my Mega Man games to be on Nintendo's system.

Last month I played Mega Man 1-6 on NES. So, I'm ready for Mega Man 9.

Ageed. I believe the 360 version is coming out October 1st. This is five days later. I don't like being charged for content a few days after the game comes out. If the team releases content monthes later than that is fine because they have been working on it long after the game has shipped. But if the content comes out around the day the game launches and costs money, that sucks.

Aren't you the guy that defended DLC for FF:MLatK?

It's bonus material. Protoman isn't required to complete Megaman 9, he's an extra feature, just like any other DLC feature.

Just because protoman isn't in the initial download doesn't mean the game is incomplete. Get a hold of yourself. It's not like you have to wait until next year to get him. I'm sure you can amuse yourself for two weeks with Megaman 9 before you download Protoman.

Or you can throw tantrums every day until the DLC is available, just like you did with Pokemon Ranch. Your call.

Protoman is like the tracks from Guitar Hero World Tour. It's incomplete.

The setlist is already there, not even a month left til release, and already we're getting DLC from Metallica and smashing pumpkins. They didn't complete it, so we have to pay a little extra for something they didn't complete.

So simply because they have DLC ready to distribute at the same time the game goes live means that the game is incomplete?

What if they announced a six months ago Megaman 9 would be released in September and that they were also working on an expansion for it that would add Protoman as a playable character and the expansion would be ready by December. Would you cry "ARGH! It's incomplete!" in that scenario as well?

Heck, by that logic, let's just call every game that ever has or ever will have DLC incomplete at launch.

You're missing the point

The game isn't even out, yet it has fee based downloadable content

It's not like it was released previously in Japan and now both regions get the downloadable content at the same time. The game is ready to go yet they're holding back one character (ready now) for users to pay a fee for.

That's like buying Super Mario Bros but to play as Luigi you have to pay extra

They developed Protoman as DLC, not as part of the core game. Whether they made him a year after MM9 was released or a week doesn't change the fact that it's simply DLC.

Holding back parts of the game that are ready at launch so users have to pay for an incomplete game at launch is robbery

But the game IS complete. Simply because they have DLC ready for it two weeks after the game's launch doesn't mean the initial game is incomplete.

Now if they released the game with only 4 of the 8 bosses and we had to purchase the other 4 just to complete the game, THEN it would be incomplete.

Was Guitar Hero 3 incomplete because it didn't come with all the download tracks? Was Rock band incomplete when it was released? Was Final Fantasy: My Life as the King incomplete? All of these games are polished and completely playable without the extra content offered as DLC.

Protoman isn't required to play the game. He's an extra. Not having him doesn't make the game incomplete. He costs two bucks. Get over it.

Mike, it's the principle of the thing. Developers are taking advantage of DLC. It can be used for good, or it can be used for bad. In this case, it's pretty clear that it's a bad use of DLC.

Think about it. The Protoman addition would be an unlockable feature in any other retail game. You beat the game as Megaman, you unlock Protoman for some replay value. That's textbook. But instead, we're paying extra money for something that has been included in the retail price of games for years. It would be like paying extra for the Minus Worlds in Super Mario Bros., or for Luigi in Mario Galaxy.

This is awesome, I can't wait to play it.

But why does it cost more on the Wii and PS3 and less on the X-Box 360?

The game will be released for download on the September 22 for the Wii (1000 points). Playstation Network gets it September 25th ($9.99), and XBLA will have it October 1 (800 points)!

I know it's a Wii-Ware game, but it's still technically an NES game so shouldn't it be 500 Wii Points?

That doesn't seem fair that X-Box owners have to pay less than Wii and PS3 owners.

Yeah, but retail games aren't released at $10, either. If this were a full fledged retail game, then yes, I would agree Protoman (and any other DLC they are planning for it) should just be included at launch. But it's not a full retail game.

You're mistaken. 800 points IS $10 for them. They buy their 1600 point cards for $20(unless they picked some cards up at Target when they sold them for only $15...), which evens out to $10 for all users.(1 cent is hardly anything to praise... 2 cents maybe...)

Thought you might say that.

From the looks of it, creating Protoman required very little time and effort. I think it's a great addition, but it isn't one that necessarily requires a lot of reprogramming and redesign. Certainly not enough to justify a price increase of 20%. It just seems like something that could've easily been included with the game at the price of $10 without any profit loss. Instead, people who like the game are required to pay extra in order to play it again in a form that's traditionally included with the game in the first place.

I honestly wouldn't mind this so much if it weren't a troubling trend in the industry as a whole, thus the introductory comments I made in my last message.

The game is called Megaman 9, not Megaman and Protoman 9. The game is suppose to feature MM vs 8 robot masters and finally taking on Wily. That is a Megaman game and that is what you get for your 10 dollars. Protoman is an extra that is not required, you dont have to play as him, if you want to, you pay the extra two bucks. I mean would it make you feel better if he was available at launch and the game cost 1200 points. Its not a big deal, its an extra it would have been nice if it was free of charge but no developer is entitled to add extra's into a game, but that doesnt make it incomplete.

From the looks of it, (A)creating Protoman required very little time and effort. I think it's a great addition, but it isn't one that necessarily requires a lot of reprogramming and redesign. Certainly not enough to justify a price increase of 20%. (B)It just seems like something that could've easily been included with the game at the price of $10 without any profit loss. I honestly wouldn't mind this so much if it weren't a troubling trend in the industry as a whole, thus the introductory comments I made in my last message.

Of your two points I underlined:

A) I'm sure the time and effort that went in to programming Protoman is at least worth two bucks.

B) It's also something that could've easily been disregarded completely without any profit loss.

Besides, how do we know it's only just another playable character? I'm sure he comes with his own ending, story arc, etc. And they did mention some in-game achievements (not to be confused with XBL achievements) so it's quite possible that the Protoman download will come with it's own set of achievements.

I understand your beef with the industry simply milking the DLC scene. I agree, it's a system that can be abused. I just don't really see it here, as this is only a $10 investment with a $2 option. Could they have included Protoman in the initial $10 version? Sure. But they didn't have to add Protoman at all, so it's really an extra.

Personally I think this game is going to have plenty more replay value than Lost Winds. If Lost Winds was worth the $10 (Which I think it was), then MM9 definitely will be.

But all that is neither here nor there. My original interjection into this thread was to refute the claim that Megaman 9 was being released "incomplete," which I don't feel is true by any means.

I'm sure the time and effort that went in to programming Protoman is at least worth two bucks.Mike1978Smith

That's two bucks for almost every game sold. In charging the extra two bucks, they'll probably make at least tens of thousands of dollars (I have no idea how many copies will sell). And they probably spent a tiny fraction of that amount on the feature itself. That's what I meant by the point that the price doesn't match the development cost. They just tacked on a price because people will pay it. That's a fundamental principle of capitalism, granted, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. ;)

Sounds good.I might actually purchase it the day it releases, which is something I haven't done for a game in quite a while.
