So I want to see peoples opinions on the four 3D mario games (64, sunshine, Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2) and how difficult they are. I hear Galaxy 2 is more difficult then 1, but is it more difficult then 64 or sunshine? or is it on the same level or easier? obviously it is somewhat of an opinion, but I want to hear it :P.

I would say Sunshine was possibly the hardest one out of the three excluding galaxy 1. That is just what I remember though and I have not played Galaxy 2 yet.

I find the whole difficulty thing to be so flimsy and subjective, but my personal opinion on the matter is that Galaxy 2 does provide a formidable challenge at stretches. I think some of the game's puzzles are a bit easier than their Galaxy 1 counterparts (like a few of the purple coin challenges), whereas others are significantly tougher (like the speed runs). All in all, I would say that the game's challenge level is very respectable, but I've found all of the 3D Mario games to be much of the same way. It's just a matter of how you deal with a lot of the mechanics, I suppose.

I agree with this order of difficulty.

And is galaxy 2 a big jump down from 64 or minor?

I found Galaxy 2 to be the most challenging, followed by Galaxy (which was also challenging) then 64 and lastly sunshine.

after getting 242 stars with mario twice and once with luigi in Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2 was pretty easy.

1. Sunshine - hardest

2. 64

3. Galaxy 1

4. Galaxy 2 - easiest

Sunshine is the hardest 3D Mario platformer because of the controls and the camera. If the game had Galaxy controls and camera, it would be a piece of cake. 95% of the difficulty is in trying to get the game to do what you want it to. That problem is virtually non-existent in the Galaxy games, so they feel a lot easier even if the platforming is much more complex than in Sunshine (which only had complex platforming in the waterpackless levels).

I just finished getting 120 shines in Sunshine last week, so it's fresh in my memory. It's actually pretty amazing how they managed to fix both the control and camera problems in the Galaxy games.

Haven't played Galaxy 2, but between the other 3 games, sunshine is easily the hardest just because of the blue coins.

The blue coins were the worst idea ever. A few of them are pretty much impossible to find without using a guide. For people who like to 100% games with no help (like me), the blue coins just pissed me off. I could only find about 3/4 of them without a FAQ.

omg I hated those :x Let's randomly spray everything imaginable. Find a ton of secret areas. You have to do little tricks like randomly rotate puny little windmills. That's one of the single worst features on any Gamecube game that I ever played. That and SMS's camera  I'll cut it some slack though, if someone could do tell me at least if there was a map of where the remaining coins were? A number of how many coins were left to search? Anything? I ask this because I know I didn't catch the whole final nine Sky Temple Keys in Metroid Prime 2...maybe something else I was missing in Mario Sunshine? (I got 95 stars and totally quit, gave it back to friend back a long time ago)

Well there's 30 blue coins per level. You'll only know that if you check a guide. Unless you're on a mission to 100% all the Mario games like I was, there's no point in going back to Sunshine to get 120 shines if all you need are the blue coin shines. Not worth it.

I thought that SM64 was the easiest, then SMS, then SMG, then SMG2. I don't think the blue coins are so bad...I actually liked them because I though it was an easy way to get shines. They get harder of course and I do look at FAQs and stuff for ones I can't find, so I guess if I didn't have help, I would find it harder and more frusterating too.

i haven't played Sunshine but for me the hardest is SMG2 followed by SMG then 64. I played 64 for the first time on my DS since i didn't have an N64 but i almost got all stars from 64. The purple coins, prankster comets, etc. of the 2 Galaxy games was what made it hard for me.

In terms of difficulty: 1. Sunshine
2. 64
3. Galaxy 2
4. Galaxysavebattery

That sounds about right to me. Sunshine is the only one of the bunch that I haven't fully completed, mostly because of those evil blue coins. :(

4. Galaxy 2

Don't get me wrong, Galaxy 2 is my fav of the bunch. It was just a breeze for me. Maybe because I was having so much fun!

I think the Perfect Run (the very last star in Galaxy 2 after getting all the green stars) is the hardest Mario level ever (including 2D ones).

Depending on If you are tryong to beat it or if you are trying to 100% it the order changes.

Galaxy 2 is the hardest in pure platforming while sunshine is hard because of timers, coins, and confusing objectives
