Is it safe to leave Connect24 on?  I don't want my Wii overheating.  It is not touching any walls, and is upright in the stand.

Yes. I leave mine on all the time. It never overheats. It doesn't even get hot. Keep in mind it's on standby and uses barley any energy.

That's a LED light, the energy is uses is insignificant.

mine gets a little bit hot, but i dont think its going to overheat. i really havent found wii connect 24 that useful so far anyways. i received maybe about 4 or 5 messages, so if ur really so nervous, you could probably just turn it off.

It's perfectly safe to leave the Wii on standby
It's an electrical device so of course it's going to be warm, the reason you feel it is because the Wii is so small that it has no padding to keep the heat from reaching the outside.

If you have a TV set built in the 10 years that too is always on even when you shut it off, the reason you never know it is because it doesn't tell you it's in standby and there's extra padding.

It's fine to leave on.

If youre worried, then leave it off. It doesnt even download anything while its on, its basically useless in its current form.

I've had it on all day, and it's hardly even warm, I'm not really worried about it.

Um, if it wasn't safe then N wouldn't have made it available to use. And, it does depend on if the person has the wii closed in in a very tight spot. But since your's is in a good spot, then it is fine. Just occasionally touch the wii on top and the sides to make sure it is getting adequate ventilation.
