I haven't been on an airplane in 5 years and with all of the restrictions on things anymore, I was wondering if you are allowed to bring a DS on an airplane?  My wife said she wasn't sure if you could or not.

Thanks

Well actually it's while you're on the runway, during take off and landing, and only at a certainly altitude. Either way, yes you can use the DS and I have enjoyed a few sessions of Mario Kart with my friend a few rows back on trips during my last trip to Las Vegas.

Do they sometimes mistake your stylus for a pointy and dangerous object when they're doing that x-ray thing?

The X-Ray will be fine. It's the magnets in the walk-through scanner that would do electronics harm- it's feasible that the memory on the DS could be rendered non-functional.

I leave for Hawaii in 14 days and im taking my PSP, Ipod video, DS Lite, and GBA Micro.... I have a 12 hour flight. One of the guys I work with also works at TSA and he said yeah its fine if you bring all of those they just might have you turn them all on just to make sure theres nothing fishy.

You can't use the download play function, it collides with the airplanes mechs. you can just use it though. =)

You can use your DS on airplanes.  Follow all in-flight instructions regarding when electronic devices can be turned on and must be turned off.  And, make sure to disable (and, thus, not enable) any WiFi or wireless communication on the DS during the flight (it can potentially interfere with the flight crew's communications system).  I just flew a month ago and everything was fine, including going through security.

We didn't have any problems with using the wi-fi mode on my trip to Vegas last April. .

Dude, playing handheld consoles on airplane trips is the perfect excuse to play them and not get lectured by your parents to turn it off because they want you to observe what's going on outside and not rot your brains playing video games. Like that's ever going to happen. :P But anyway, I think they would get sued if they confiscated personal stuff like a DS wanted to bring it the plane. That would definately suck.

Yeah, don't accidentily hit that Pictochat button on the main menu or you're going down lol. Not too sure, but depends on the plane's technology or some garbage like that maybe. I do several times a year, this year though I've gotta finally finish FFV so i can move on up :D

"All electronic devices must be switched off during taxi, take-off, and landing. You may use approved electronic devices while the fasten seat belt sign is off." To quote various airlines. The GBsp was still the item in the booklet when I flew to Ireland a few months ago, but it was approved, so I assume the DS is as well. If the wireless interferes with the plane's systems (which I highly doubt) then it's their fault for not indicating the problem with the newer system. Though...it being their fault doesn't save your life if the plane crashes. Meh, you can use it anyway. I've never had any trouble and I fly a lot, and use my DS almost every time.

When i was just in Orlando in November, my DS went through the scanner with Madden 06 inside. After that, the game wouldn't save anything i did. For your sake, make sure you have no games in the slot when you put it through.

Yeah you can. Oh and also there was this little kid behind me who had a DS and he asked the attendant to charge it for him, and she did. Thats why you bring multiple handheld consoles.

Yes, as long as it's not on during take-off or landing. I just had my DS on a couple of flights a few weeks ago.

Sounds nasty. I'll be sure to remember that if I'll fly anywhere..

You should be able to use Wi-Fi without any problems. I don't think there has ever been any reported cases of a DS interfering with wireless signals. They transmit on entirely different channels, so you should be ok. I can assure you from experience that the plane did not burst into flames when I used download play on the plane.

Eventhough the plane doesn't drop out of the sky, the do say that you are not supposed to have the WiFi turned on. Personally, I tend to play it safe as I don't want to have an extra reason for the plane to go down

I would like to point out the fact that it's been proven that WiFi and cellphones do not affect a plane the way people think they do; most of the time they don't affect it at all. (I mean c'mon, if technology is advanced enough to lift a giant piece of metal in the air at incredible speeds, I'm sure they can bypass a few different radio waves here and there. Also, every other flight has a "rogue passenger" that uses internet or their cellphone, but you don't see their plane go down or their pilots cry because they can't hear ground control) As a matter of fact, the airline industry is in constant talk with the cellphone companies right now, because they're planning to let cellphone use on planes within a couple of years. Wow, I just typed a lot.

I wasn't worried about any Wifi games since the handful of games I am playing right now don't have Wifi play (Hotel Dusk, Lunar Knights).  My main concern was just with whether I was able to take it with me, os that if I couldn't I woudl make sure to bring something else to do.

I've flown with my DS several times. It will be treated the same way as a CD player, in that you can't use it during takeoff or landing, but can during the flight.

It really isnt that importent to have your DS turn´d of during take off and landing. I´ve talked to a pilot about it and he says that in every flight about 15-20 people forget to turn of there mobile phones and no harm done (thought its better to have them turnd if, say if everyone had there phone on THEN it would f*** up the signal system in airplane to landing place).

I dont turn of my Ipod then takeing of and landing...

Actually cellphones or any other eletronics doesnt affect the plane at all, but the air companies want to prevent accidents, cause there is a lot of equipment both in airplane and the commandtower, so theres the possibility that a cellphone (newer model, older model, third parties models... etc) or a new type of comunication wave might interfere in the equipment/pilot communication, since its too expensive to test them all, they just say to you to turn them off.

I've played gameboys and DSs during take-off and landing and nothing happened...

I just kept them hidden whenever the flight attendants walked by.

Last September I had my DS, my brother was watching a movie on his portable DVD player and the lady next to us was watching a movie on her computer.

(The kid behind me had some stupid game which kept playing "who let the dogs out woof woof!" over and over and over and over.................)

So yes. You can take your DS with you on the plane.

Thanks for bumping this--I knew you could take handhelds, but I was wondering if it was ok to play DS to DS. (my boyfriend and I are going on a trip this summer--we're going to need it! ^___^ )

They might ask you to turn it on at the security check, but they've only asked me to turn on my laptop before and even that is fairly rare.

For the most part the thing about not using electrical devices before take off and landing is so the crew has control of all the information the passengers receive. If somebody receives a radio/cell phone message the weathers bad a passenger can panic and delay the flight, and put more things at risk.

As far as cell phone goes I highly doubt they'll be fully allowed anytime soon since you get a plane of 20+ people talking on their cell-phones in a plane that's already a little noisey, and the flight is unbearible.

Yes, I played my GBA during flying. I could not play it during taking off and landing, according to flight attendant. She told me so.

He he, thanks _em. When I checked my forum post log I noticed that this thread died like 14 months ago. That's why my bump was super. :D But yea, the last time I flew on an airplane they make sure you turn off your electronic device. Another thing is make sure you don't have earphones during take off and landing or even around your neck because the flight attendents will think that you're listening to music or something :P.

As for being unable to save after going through the magnetic door alarm thing, I never knew that but thankfully I always empty most of my pockets (if it's a pencil why would they need to check that) so my DS lite thankfully wasn't damaged during my trip to college here in the US from Thailand. Seriously, it's like a 22 hour flight and that's including the possible layovers as you wait for your next flight to the next city. There's 4 planes that I needed to ride in this order: Chiangmai, Thailand to Taipei, China to San Francisco, CA to Dalas, TX and finally to Fort Smith. It was a looooong journey for me, but I made it safe and sound. :)

One question. Would DS download play or multicard play effect the plane communications? I was actually thinking about starting a thread about this, but then I saw they already had one.

i was told to not play while taking off and during the landing...they announced it to the whole plane...too many people had it.
they never mentioned not being able to connect though

the answer is yes.

you can take it on the plane.

but if you want to play it during the plane, well you have to wait until lift off to play.

:P
