I was just wondering why did everybody hate Mario Sunshine? What did it do so wrong?

@pikachudude860: Ya fans have always said it was the worst and they try to forget it existed. I was even listing to an Nintendo podcast and they were bashing it. I personally have never played it but I've just always wondered why it was so bad
I like Sunshine. I thought the Flood brought an interesting twist to gameplay. It was a very pretty game, too. Sunshine isn't at the top of my list of Mario games, but it's far from the bottom.
@YearoftheSnake5: yeah honestly from what I've seen of it it looks really cool, and the art style looks nice
Not really sure. It isn't as strong as some other games in the series but it still stands well enough on its own. Plus it's a truly gorgeous game. I'd give it a solid 8/ 10. There were a lot of fun moments to be had (although some levels were infuriating).
The GameCube in general wasn't that popular of a console, it still sold decently regardless. I never played it, looking back on it now it's not something I'd want to play. It'd be hard for me to judge how I might have received it for its time, after all, for it's time it might have been very good, I can definitely concede that. Other games from its era I'd think stand the test of time quite well, like Luigi's Mansion or Metroid Prime, having not played Sunshine I can give it the benefit of the doubt that it might still be good.
Not everyone hated Sunshine. Where did you get that idea?
Sunshine's main flaws are its horrible camera (at times) and the blue coins, if you're a completionist.
The abstract, waterpack-less caves were always my favorite parts of that game by far, then Nintendo decided to make an entire franchise based on them, which was one of the smartest things the Mario team has ever done.
To me, the platforming in the rest of the game seems to take a backseat to exploration. I like Mario games for their platforming, so Sunshine is my least favorite of the 3D games.
It had some big shoes to fill with Mario 64, and i think at the time, people were transitioning to PS2/ more realistic games. Therefore, was over looked.
It did nothing wrong. Just like Luigi's Mansion, Sunshine's hated because it's different and unique. I personally love the game and actually find it more fun than SM64 (which, IMO, is pretty outdated).
It isn't that it was bad, just that it didn't live up to the ultra-high standards of Mario platformers. I guess people had a problem with the setting being a bit too monotonous when compared to Super Mario 64. I could live with that, but my main gripe with the game was that the controls and camera were not refined enough to make for a seamless platforming experience. This was blatantly obvious in the more abstract levels. Fortunately, the Galaxy games fixed these errors.
Still a good game, though.
I didn't like it. I thought the level design was lacking and I didn't like the people. And I know that Shine Sprites were like stars but it wasn't the same.
Pretty much it was underwhelming at the time compared to 64, plus a lot of gamecube games got heat and hated on at the time. even though it gets the love it deserves now Wind Waker took a lot of flak as well.
