Using the off button on the control or on the system? Does it matter which one you use?

sort of, holding down the power button on the console for 4 seconds will completely shut it off. while just pressing the button on the wiimote or system will just put it in standby mode. off=red light standby=orange light

...so a red light remains even when the system is unplugged?

Green light means:The console is on.

Red light means:The console power is turned off, and the Wiiconnect24 is turned off.

Light-Orange light means:The console power is turned off, and the Wiiconnect24 is on.

No/Black Light means:The console is completely turned off, wiiconnect24 is turned off, mostly happens during a storm, or powerbreak, or the AC Adapter is unplugged from the wii, or/and the wall outlet.

You turn your Wii console off by, clicking the Wii power button, OR by using a Wii Remote and hold down the POWER button on the top-left corner of the Wii Remote for 3 to 4 seconds, you can then release the POWER button from your Wii Remote. NOTE:You can press and hold the POWER button on your Wii Remote for 1 or 2 seconds, then your Wii console will turn on, then you can/may release the hold of the POWER button.

How much simplier do I have to make this? OR just read your Wii Instruction Manual(s) for more (info)rmation.

Why ask this question if its an option to use the remote or the system itself? Silly question.

The wiimote will put the system in wiiconnect24 standby when you use the remotes power button if you have wiiconnect24 enabled. It won't turn it "off". :P
