I would assume strategy games such as Age of empires or civilization, would use the touch screen as a substitute to the what L button brings, but I could be wrong.
My R button (snaking so much in Mariokart DS :)) used to be broken, but I kept pressing hard on it then it started working fine again. Try it, I hope it works for you
