Pretty straightforward, With the announcement of the new starters, I figured we could take a look back and reflect on the old ones. For this, you can judge it based solely on their first forms, or on the evolutionary chain as a whole. Here's my list.

Charmander (simply my favorite evolution chain design from gen 1)

Cyndaquil (same as above)

Treeko (the most consistently well designed chain from this gen. I like Blaziken and Swampert, but their first two forms leave a lot to be desired)

Chimchar (mostly for Infernape, although I also dig the Piplup line)

This is the hardest one for me. I'll probably go with Tepig (I went with Snivy in White, but didn't care for the design of the chain as a whole. Once gain, Tepig's chain is the most consistently pleasing to me, although Samurott is a very close second for my favorite third form)

Froakie (ironically enough, Froakie is my least favorite first design, but I love its next two designs, whereas I love Fennekin until it evolves, at which point it becomes too dumb for me, and Chespin's evolutions are just bizarre).

And because we're doing this, my favorite starter so far in Gen 7 is probably Rowlet. I'll have to see each chain in full, though, because I'm not crazy about any of the designs.

Lastly, even though I favor fire, I usually choose based off my favorite design, and fire coincidentally is almost always the one that pleases me most. What about you?

G1 - Charmander - I normally don't pick him as a starter, but his final form is the best.

G2 - Cyndaquil - This was a tough choice, but I always used him as a starter.

G3 - Mudkip - Should be obvious.

G4 - Haven't played enough to say for sure, but I always went with Turtwig.

G5 - Snivy - Same as above.

Haven't played G6 at all, so I can't give my opinion on that.

I went all Water for Gen 1 - 6, with Empoleon becoming my absolute favorite pokemon. However, that may change with Sun & Moon because I'm not feeling Popplio and Rowlet is shaped like a friend.

All the fire ones :P

But I'm having a look now, and if I put my fire bias aside (or at least try to minimise it), my favourite visual design:

  1. Charmander > Squirtle > Bulbasaur
  2. Cyndaquil > Totodile > Chikorita
  3. Torchic > Mudkip > Treecko
  4. Piplup > Chimchar > Turtwig
  5. Tepig > Snivy > Oshawott
  6. Fennekin > Froakie > Chespin
  7. Rowlett > Litten > Popplio

In terms of type, this is how it played out (F: fire, W: water, G: grass):

  1. F > W > G
  2. F > W > G
  3. F > W > G
  4. W > F > G
  5. F > G > W
  6. F > W > G
  7. G > F > W

So my fire bias is probably still in play here, followed by water then grass. Interestingly, grass is my favourite visually for the first time ever in a Pokemon series in the upcoming Sun and Moon, which is pretty awesome.

1. Squirtle (On my most recent playthroughs I have been using Charmander, however.)

2. Cyndaquil

3. Torchic (Originally I might have chosen Mudkip, though.)

4. Turtwig

5. Oshawott

6. Chespin

7. Rowlet, so far.

1) Charmander (he's a dragon)

2) Chickorita (Brachiosauruses are my favourite dinosaurs)

3) Torchic (I just thought it was adorable)

4) Chimchar (Maybe my favourite final evolution design of the starters)

5) Snivy (just because he seemed interesting)

6) Chespin

7) I'm going with Rowlet for sure and I'm going media black out so I hopefully won't see its evolution chain until I see it evolve first hand.

G1: Charmander. Though I like Squirtle a lot too. Not a fan of Bulbasaur

G2: I don't really like any of them. But Cydaquil is my favorite.

G3. Love them all. Treecko is my favorite though. Like OP said, all three forms are great, and the first 2 forms of the others aren't as good.

G4. Another great trio. But I think I'll give it to Piplup. I picked Chimchar the only time I played though. But looking at them now, I'm liking Empoleon quite a bit more then I did then. It's hard to pick a favorite, though.

G5. Easy, Snivy. The only one I like from here, really. It's really good, though.

G6: Froakie. The others are kinda, meh. Not bad, but not great. I love Greninja, though.

And as for Gen 7, I'm leaning toward Rowlet. But I'm liking Litten a lot too.

Gen 1: Charmander (For obvious reasons)

Gen 2: Feraligator (Love stage 1 and 3)

Gen 3: Treecko (Love the entire evolutionary chain and it makes alpha sapphire a breeze)

Gen 4: Chimchar (Turtwig is a close second, but Piplup is way behind)

Gen 5: Snivy (Smug af)

Gen 6: Froakie (Love the entire evolutionary chain, the other two aren't even close)

Gen 7: Litten (I don't really like any of the new starter designs too much, but I guess Litten is a little better than the competition)

My starters are mostly based on their design

I mainly chose by design on how good they are..unless they are crazy great in power but starters are pretty balanced. Humanoid looking and bipedal final forms pokemon I'm not a fan of in general unless they are only psychic or fighting. Excuse misspells I'm too lazy to look them up.

gen 1: so hard I got to rank it. Bulbasaur>Squirtle>Chamander but final evo Charizard>Blastoise>Venasaur. So by that logic, squirtle?

gen 2: really hard to pick from cyndaquil and chikorita, though totadila is respectable. Think cyndaquil beats chikorita just a tad.

gen 3. Teecho...hands down. Blazaken is a digimon.

gen 4. All good though I notice that I don't like monkey or ape pokemon..i don't know why. Piplup wins because Empoleon is over dress for everything...ITS IN A SUIT!

gen 5: Oshawatt. Snivy would win but it loses some of its smugness when it turns into a full snake.

gen 6: Froakie hands down. Delphox is another digimon.

gen 7: ummmm hmmm. Not popplio lol. If it didnt have that balloon for a nose maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Rowlett is cool with its bowtie but I like cats so litten wins. But litten will probably turn humanoid and look horrible so Rowlett is the winner.

This is complicated, because there are starters that I adore the starter but don't like the evolutions. I'll try.

G1: I really have no opinion, actually. I suppose I'll go with Squirtle since I always chose it.

G2: Chikorita, I suppose.

G3: Torchic is the cutest, but its final evolution does nothing for me. Not a fan of the Mudkip line at all, and Treecko is 'okay'.

G4: Piplup wins because it is adorable. I'm not as fond of its final evolution, but it's fine.

G5: I go with Oshawott because of Samurott. Samurott is my favorite fully evolved Starter of all time.

G6: Finnekin is really cute. Froakie is cute, too, and doesn't evolve too weirdly. (well turning 'Dark' type is a little odd, but designwise it's fine). I like Braixen, but the final evolution is a bit awkward to me.

G7: So far definitely Rowlet.

I only really like Cyndaquil (Gen 2) and Froakie (Gen 6).

Not the biggest fan of starters overall. Or Legendaries_

I like Pokémon with simple designs but also look unique, and keep that as they evolve.

I feel the others are either over designed or far too simple. . I know tons who use Charmander, but that's a lizard that turns into a dragon. It's not very clever, other than the flame on its tail. . I dunno. I know people like dragons. I'm just not one of them.

But I'm sure someone always likes the designs and typing I don't.

@RSM-HQ: People like dragons because the concept of a fire breathing lizard with wings is fucking awesome. Not saying you're wrong, just explaining.

1- Charmander

2- Cyndaquil

3- Mudkip

4- Turtwig

5- Snivy

6- Fenner in

7- As for this gen it would be impossible to already have made up my mind, so for now I'll just say Rowlet, he seems the most appealing.

Generation I: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard. (Come on! It's a fucking DRAGON!! Screw Flying!)

Generation II: Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion. (My FIRST.)

Generation III: Torchic, Combusken, Blaziken. (The mid-evolution looks like a penis, but other than that Blaziken is a BEAST.)

Generation IV: Turtwig, Grotle, Torterra. (Imagine LIVING on that thing!)

Generation V: Snivy, Servine, Serperior. (This one's kind of a no brainer. Emboar is another fire/fighting and Samurott looks like a doofus.)

Generation VI: Froakie, Frogadier, Greninja. (Visually, the coolest water starter, and a total badass.)

Generation VII: Rowlet, Dartrix, Decidueye. (Please, Litten ain't got nothing on this gentleman owl with a bowtie. #teamrowlet)

Well as I recently mentioned, Grass and Fire-type seem to be tied for me as my favorite starters. It's funny to me because I generally like Water-types a lot.

Water-type is just too often outclassed by its competition. Gen 5, my least-favorite gen for some reason, is the only one where I can say for sure I would stick with the Water-type starter. Oshawott is just too cool - otters and samurai, two things I really like. Snivy and Tepig really weren't much competish that gen imo. But Charmander and Torchic easily pulled me away from Squirtle and Mudkip, because I liked their final evolutions much better. Froakie was pretty strong competition for Chespin I admit, but I like Chespin because of how drastic its transformations are.

I think there is kind of an overarching theme they go with each gen, so the starters end up filling different roles. With gen 6 you had Chestnaut being like the tank/knight, Greninja being like the ninja, and Delphox is based on some sort of witch. Then with gen 7 Decidueye is an archer, Incineroar is a pro wrestler, and Primarina is a mermaid opera singer thing.

Next gen it's possible the Grass-type will be some sort of feminine thing, the Fire-type will be speedster, and the Water-type will be a tank.
