I'm wondering in particular about Perfect Dark and Turok 2 which both look great, but I prefer smoothness of framerate over texture quality and resolution

@mariokart97: High quality textures can effect FPS some, but its usually very minor, resolution on the other hand can affect the FPS a lot. Also effects to help the textures can be taxing, for example shadows and lighting can affect your FPS a bunch.

The N64 could display resolutions of 320 × 240 up to 640 × 480 pixels, however most games used the lower resolution. Some used the higher resolutions and others that used it had to use the expansion RAM to help performance.

I remember the framerate being better with lower res in Perfect Dark, assuming you have the expansion pak. It would actually be 60fps at times... if you looked at a wall or the ground.

Not sure about Turok 2. I assume you have both of these games. Can't you just test it out?

Using a widescreen mode with the black bars can help the fps a little bit if a game has that and Perfect Dark has that. Yes it does lower the framerate in hi-res mode.

Sometimes it is negligible, though. Armorines for example. Turok 2 is very close. It's a shame that the pack wasn't simply used for smoother framerates. And it's also a shame that games like Wave Race didnt get sequels that benefitted from the extra memory.

I have since tried this for myself and do feel that the framerate is more stable and overall higher all the time. Thanks for backing up my thoughts with your responses
