Can the WiiU be used with no tablet controller?

i have a chance to get a cheap wiiu with no tablet controller, is it possible to use it with just pro controller? only want it for mario kart 8 and SSB

You won't find a Wii U marketed without the Gamepad. If you got one without it, you wouldn't be able to do what's necessary in the Settings menu to get everything set up. When(or if) you get a Wii U, you can leave the Gamepad on the charger and simply use the Pro for whatever you need(minus a couple system menus).

Bad idea. As year of the snake pointed out, while you rarely need the tablet to play, you need it to run the machine a lot of the time, not just settings. Seriously....bad idea.
