I'm considering purchasing a 3DS for some occasional gaming (I no longer play games at home), but moreso than the gaming machine I need a music player with high capacity, good file support and great sound quality. Opinions?

If you want a portable gaming handheld with a quality music player built in, id recommend a ps vita over a 3DS in that regard. If you want a quality music player with portable gaming built in, id recommend an ipod Touch.

It is a passable music player at best. Its volume output is low. The way you put music on it is by taking the SD card out of it and putting it into a computer and just manually copying them (so it won't sync well w/ whatever program you play music on on your PC) and it doesn't support many formats at all. I actually think it only supports MP3 and AAC, which is pretty bad no matter how you cut it.

As a gaming device it is totally awesome though.

I've never tried using it for music, myself. However, the Vita has a decent DAC(psp, as well) which outputs better audio than an iPod.

If you want a good music player then just get an iPOD or any other MP3 player you like.

If you want a good handheld to play video games and to have a decent music/video player get a VITA.

If you want just a good handheld and do not care about music/video players then you can get a 3ds or Vita whatever you prefer.

It's okay, but rather quiet in terms of volume. That and scrolling through the different music folders is rather slow compared to the speed of most other devices.

I didn't recommend and iphone, did I now? I'm not saying the 3DS has a bad battery life for gaming but it isn't long enough for the quantity of music I listen too. also its a bit bulky and heavy to go jogging with or something.

Just get a Sansa Clip, it can play lossless files like wav and flac and expandable to 32Gb. Very compact and affordable.

The 3DS is such a poor music player it might as well not even be a feature. It's a bullet point, as it technically does play music, but almost anything released in the past decade will do the job better.

Pretty much. I'm not sure why they even gave it music playback capabilities. Yeah it's there but it's worse than pretty much any other device capable of the same thing.

I was hoping to use this as a replacement for my iPod Nano but it's volume output is just too low for it to be any good. Also it has to load all your songs every time you open the application which is quite annoying as it takes a while.
