Dunno AR wasn't that big a deal on 3ds though that might partly be Nintendo's fault for under using it.

Apple is about to leapfrog everyone else in regards to AR, both in terms of immediate usability, developer tools, implementation, usefulness, and mass appeal. Apple's approach and execution with AR and ARKit is unmatched.

Google's recent 'unveiling' of their own solution feels a lot like the original iPhone vs the original android. It has to be so frustrating to be in that position again. But the rest of the industry may just be used to it by now (the original iPhone, 64 bit mobile CPUs, Touch ID--and now Face ID and ARKit--just to name a few).

I just wish these companies would just stop trying to mimic each other

@Celsius765: Well Android wouldn’t have existed, were that the case. It was going to be a blackberry os clone, but ended up being an iOS clone.

Update on this -- games are by far the most downloaded AR experience so far, I have a couple and they're pretty interesting. Looking forward to seeing other apps, utility apps, look at utilizing some AR things for other purposes.

Thinking about maps apps, travel and landmark apps (though I'd never need the help, the travel impaired would really benefit from a visual roadmap through an airport in AR, for example), etc. Games are fun, but I'm more interested in other applications for this technology.

Are we at number 8 already... that was fast. No joke it looks pretty. Question is... is it worth the money you spend to buy a gadget that is outdated within 8 months.
