Google has launched Android One in select African countries via the Infinix Hot 2. For those unfamiliar with the program, Android One devices run the latest version of vanilla Android and receive updates directly from Google.

Known specifications:

  • Android 5.1 Lollipop (6.0 Marshmallow coming soon)
  • 5.0" 720p display
  • Quad core MediaTek SoC
  • 1 GB or 2 GB RAM
  • 16 GB internal storage
  • Rear 8 MP camera with LED flash
  • Front 2 MP camera
  • Dual SIM support
  • FM radio
  • 2,200 mAh battery

The model with 1 GB RAM will sell for $87 and for $97 you get the device 2 GB RAM.

While this device doesn't offer nearly as much hardware value as something like the $98 Meizu M2, it does benefit from being part of the Android One program and running vanilla Android.

@NVIDIATI: I was just curious what the overarching mission was. That's all.

@FireEmblem_Man: I imagine you meant to say that everyone in African can't afford an iPhone.

And you can put your dogs of war back in the kennel. Asking why isn't an attack or indictment. It's a curiosity.

To expand the reach of the Android One program and help bring up the quality of low end devices in developing nations. Every Android One device must meet certain hardware requirements set by Google.

That test proved that by applying enough force, you can break an expensive piece of technology. Don't fall for FUD.
