I'm looking to buy an HDTV now that I have a fully capable Blu-Ray machine. I need to know whether or not I should get right now, or wait a little while. My original plan was to wait for the holiday season when most companys drop their prices that way I could get a better deal on one. The other day I was told that HDTV prices would start rising sometime in November because of that new law (the one going in effect in 2009, has something to do with cable receptions only being digital, I'm not too sure exactly what it's about). Either way, I won't have enough money till around the end of the summer. Like I said, I wanted to wait for the holiday season, but not if prices are gonna be higher then they already are. So does anyone have any advice?

I have one place where you'll get the best deals on TV, Sam's Club (not Wal-Mart)

They've been dropping in price for awhile now, but yeah, I've heard rumors that they'll go up in price come Nov. Also, alot of companies are releasing their new models, so you should be able to pick up a good tv on a lower budget.

All TV broadcasts must switch to digital signal by Feb 2009 so the broadcast airwave space used is lessened, as the Gov't already auctioned off the newly created free airwave space.

I don't believe HDTVs will go up in price. In fact, usually they are cheaper in Nov since that is the holiday buying season, and with the economy so bad, merchants are probably going to be doing deals to lure shoppers who have much less disposable income than in years past.

Black Friday is particularly great for HDTV deals if you are willing to camp out for them.

My thoughts exactly. If all TV is going digital, doesn't that mean that many people would want to buy new TVs? So in order for people to buy the TVs, they'll have to make them cheaper so they can make the demand high

Prices are pretty good as is, I'd say. In the under-$1000 range you get a pretty nice 32" or something like that, or a crappier 42". Over a thousand and you're looking at nicer 42" LCD's and even some plasmas (I love plasma :D).

I've said it many times, but I shall do so again. Try Walmart. I managed to get a 32" SHARP HDTV for only $400.

There are some nice 32" 1080p Tv's that range from about $800-$1100 so I recommend you get one of them (if you want a small TV)

At that size, 1080p is pretty much wasted unless you plan on sitting 2 feet from the screen. The difference between 720p and 1080p is practically impossible to discern anywhere south of 42 inches.

That being said, 720p is the best way to go for that screen size. That's where I'm headed.

Amazon.com usually has free shipping if you buy at the right time, white glove shipping at that. And depending on where you live, no tax. My 42" 1080p 30k:1 contrast ratio Plasma HDTV only cost 1299 on the dot. Teuf knows the glory, for he own nearly an identical tv. Plasma FTW for gaming.

Yes, if you are under 42, heck even at 42, 1080p isn't really needed. 720p will look just as good. Don't believe the hype. +1 for Game here.

I don't plan on getting anything bigger then 32". I was also gonna settle for 720p just for the price difference, but knowing that makes the choice easier too.

So a 1080p 32" HDTV isn't recommended?

Nope. It's just not worth the premium over a 720p set of the same size.

Is 1080p even worth it at all really? I mean, sure it'd look a bit nicer, but is it worth the price jump? I'm thinking of buying an HD soon as well, so I'd like to know. Probley in the 40" range.

By no means, especially at the size you're looking at. I've compared 720p and 1080p side by side on two 32" HDTVs, and the difference was literally unnoticable for me.

1080p isn't really noticable unless its 53"+. Even at this point its a waste of money because shows and sports are broadcasted at 720p on HD channels. Also there is barely any games that are 1080p native to begin with.

Most 32" TV's can't actually display 1080p. They'll take a 1080p input signal and scale it down to 1366 x 768.

Why? I had my TV shipped, and it's working out for me pretty well. Free white glove delivery from Amazon. EDIT: I'd also like to add, the TV I got from a reputable seller (Amazon itself) for hundreds less than the same TV would have cost me in the store, and there was also no tax or delivery fee (which there would have been had I bought it in a store).

Worked for you. The majority of the time there is a high risk of it arriving damaged.

I think as long as you get it from a reputable and accountable shipping company, it's ok. Amazon ships with their own company which they claim full accountability for.

That wouldn't be an issue with Amazon. They'd take them back and get you new ones. It must be who the shipping company was.
