Hi, I was just trying to find the best hidden gems within RPG'S, any console any generation. In my opinion the best RPG's are free roamers, or Turn Based here are my favorites. Fable II: Fable II is my favorite installment to the series, you can free roam it's short and simple and a lot of things to do, you can go off and explore, get married, raise a child, play co-op (Which I admit doesn't work at all.) Get a job or do the main story. With the choice of Good or Evil, this game makes my favorites. Final Fantasy 7: Yes, I know cliche, but it's just a brilliant twist on a turn based RPG. I won't go as in-depth as I did last time but that is why I chose FF7. The Elder Scrolls: Utter brilliancy, can you think of a better free roaming RPG? I thought so. Now this series has it all. All the variety let's face it; you can do anything you want and everyone loves this game the battle system is great and gets better throughout the series. Mage, Archer, Warrior, Argonian, Khajit, Nord. Hardly any of the variety. What's yours? Feel free to post below!!!

my favorite RPG of all time is FF2

i loved FF7 but hated all the FF games since that one.

if you count legend of zelda: link to the past as an RPG then that tops the list (i see it as more of an action/RPG) and not a pure RPG.

fallout 3 is it a shooter or RPG? if RPG it tops all of these

i also love kindoms of amalur reckoning - might not be considered an RPG becuase it's so action/combat oriented

so i'll say

1. Legend of Zelda: Link to the past (best game ever - bar none IMO)

2. Fallout 3

3. FF2

4. FF7

5. KoA:R

My Favorite is Oblivion it's so fun to just wander round and find quests to do. I prefer it to Skyrim because of it setting it's only problem would probably be that it's combat isn't that good.

In no particular order, I consider these RPGs to be the best ones of all-time. Planescape: Torment Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 Star Control 2 Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 (Second game makes the list if Version 1.7 of the Restored Content Mod is added to it. Excluded otherwise.) Dragon Quest VIII Final Fantasy IX Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy VI The Witcher 1 and 2 Dragon Age Origins Mass Effect 1 Neverwinter Nights 2 and Mask of the Betrayer The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines Persona 3 and Persona 4 It's a long list I admit, but I've been playing RPGs for a long time.

Give Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 a go. BG2 is my favourite game of all time.

Xenoblade is also excellent if you've got a wii, DS Dragon Quest's.

Suikoden Tactics (weak story, but very addictive battles)

Vandal Hearts 1 & 2 (awesome stories, fun battles)

Adventures of Alundra (Zelda's evil clone!)

Breath of Fire 1 & 3 (I just couldn't get into 2 for some reason...)

I havent played a whole lot of rpgs. But Id say every Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind. I remember enjoying one called Legend of Dragoon or something like that. There was a turn based Lord of the Rings game I enjoyed, I cant recall the name now. KotoR was fun. My all time favorites are the Mass Effect games though.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean for the Gamecube is a nice turn based game with a card based combat system.

I also like any of the GBA or GB Pokemon games, DS ones are just too slow paced. The Paper Mario series is also very good along with Megaman X Command Mission. Oh, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, and XenoGears!

Just so many that I love!

Give Final Fantasy III (VI) a shot, I don't think anyone that's played both III and VII would say the latter is better -- it just got a lot of exposure as a PS game. Chrono Trigger is also worth checking out -- easily one of the best RPGs ever made -- as is Phantasy Star II and Final Fantasy II (V) - if you go for FF II, you might want to get a version that isn't the original SNES American one or the one on the Wii VC - they were both toned down in difficulty, and turned out to be very easy.

More recently, Xenoblade: Chronicles and TESV: Skyrim come to mind. I'm not a huge fan of The Last Story, but it's critically acclaimed.

In order. 1) Every single game in the original Might and Magic series (not the later Heros of Might and Magic series, which aren't RPGs). 2) Guild Wars. 3) So far, Xenoblade.

6) Secret of Mana (SNES)
5) Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
4) Final Fantasy VI (SNES)

3.Mass Effect 2

4.Dragon Age:Origins (Best Storylining EVER!!!!!!!)

I really can't pick between fallout 3 or Skyrim, but I think fallout was slightly better thanks to it's apocalyptic atmosphere and amazing soundtracks.

Especialy the soundtracks.

So great to see someone brag on the old Commodore 64, and Amiga system gaming platforms. I would agree with you, some of the best gaming I have ever remembered was on a 64 years ago. I would of shared these games on my post also but I figured most of these young poeple would have know idea what I was talking about. Legend of Grimrock - seems to me to be re-creation of the old game Dungeon Master, I first played this on a Atari computer, then later found it for the Amiga, was a very challenging game in its day. Since you are a loyal 64 and Amiga fan, have you seen anywhere where to get Barbarian the Death Sword for PC? Supposedly it released in March but I can't find it anyhwere on the web? Thanks and great post.

The Mass Effect series has always been my all-time favourite RPG series. Other RPG's that are great to play are Dark Souls, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Deus Ex. I haven't played the Final Fantasy games, but I've heard they're really good and plan to get into them soon. :)

Personal tastes are subjective and debatable, of course.

Objectively speaking now, let's consider these aspects that make a truly unique and mature game experience:

1. FULL VOICE ACTING (important base for any characters' personality)

Notable: Gothic series, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect series

Winner: Mass Effect series

2. CHARACTERS (memorability, immersion, personality, emotion, romance etc)

Notable: Dragon Age series, KOTOR series, Mass Effect series

Winner: Mass Effect series (almost tied with KOTOR)

3. CONTROLS, MOVEMENT, ORIENTATION (inspired, logical, choreographic combat)

Notable: Gothic series, KOTOR series, Jade Empire, Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, Mass Effect series

Winner: KoAR (almost tied with ME)

4. DIVERSIFIED STORY (possible multi-story; attractive narrative, moral choices, alternate paths, different endings etc.)

Notable: Gothic series, KOTOR series, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, Jade Empire, Mass Effect series

Winner: KOTOR series

5. LOGICAL DIFFICULTY (building main character makes a real difference in fights; same goes for equipment)

Notable: Gothic series, KOTOR series, Jade Empire, Mass Effect series

Winner: Gothic series

6. VISUALS AND GRAPHICS

Notable: KoAR, Mass Effect series

Winner: Mass Effect series (almost tied with KoAR)

...............................................................................................

Overall winner: Mass Effect series. This game really draws a standard for the future rpg games.

Conclusion: There are games of the past and games of the future. Games of the past didn't care much about the Person itself (gamer, main char, npcs etc.), whihc means: personality, dialogues, philosophy of life, emotion, romance etc.

Games of the past insisted on graphics, gore, "dark" something, tons of eye strenuous effects, killing. There comes an age when you grow up, evolve and, naturally, leave such games behind you.

Games of the future will come to care more and more about the Person and Emotion above combat and action. Not that action will dissapear, instead will have its place, one well behind the first one of building a Personality and Relations...

That's one reason why some people prefer a good Visual Novel to many so-called "rpg games"...

I agree with your list. Totally awesome since I list a lot of these in my personal top 25 RPGs of all time. A lot of people/friends also say that Final Fantasy IV and VI are probably the greatest JRPGs of the 16 bit era. Most people remember Final Fantasy VII on PSone because of all the advertising at the time. My 5 others that aren't on your list are (in no particular order) Shining Force I & II, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate1, and Skies of Arcadia (Gamecube version)

These RPGs would feature among my favourites of all-time:

- Fallout 3 GOTY
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY
- The Witcher 1 & 2
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY (with OOO mod on PC)
- Neverwinter Nights + all expansions (still prefer it over NWN 2)
- Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
- Fallout: New Vegas (the patched less-buggy version)
- Gothic 2
- Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
- Two Worlds II
- Planescape Torment
- Fallout 1 & 2
- Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
- Arx Fatalis
- Eye Of The Beholder 1 & 2
- Lands Of Lore: Throne Of Chaos
- Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth Of Worlds
- Betrayal At Krondor

Action RPGs would include:

- Dungeon Siege + Legends Of Aranna
- Divine Divinity
- Divinity II
- Sacred Gold
- Torchlight
- Titan Quest + expansion
- Sacred 2 (X360 version - a flawed and buggy gem)
