Hm, I kind of hesitate to bring up old games - because while I may have enjoyed them at the time, they really can't hold up to today's standards.
This is the beauty of older games. We all know (I would like to think we all do) older games are not going to hold a candle to games which are currently being released today. That is absolutely fine by me in my opinion. I have seen/played games which were graphically superior but was absolutely horrible when it came to gameplay. I will admit there are a lot of games that did not focus much on the development; they were more your games that allowed you to endlessly rain destruction on your enemies with no real end-game. Others; such as Resident Evil 2 developed the story. I use RE2 as an example ONLY and am not attempting to compare it to other games. My point in this response is to simply look at the variables. What you compare to today's standards are not going to be the same as mine. BUT....this is a great thing and what makes the gaming industry amazing!
Perhaps if I were just to look at fun/enjoyment I could certainly list a few games:
Street Fighter 2: very simple, yet accessible - and because of that, probably more enjoyable than today's versions.
Xcom Enemy Unknown: One of the first of it's kind; graphics were simple but it had it's charm
Master of Orion 1/2: Fairly basic by today's standards but it was very addictive
Fallout 3: Great roleplaying and was one of the first 3d rpgs
F.E.AR.: Deserves to be on the list; great action, intelligent A.I and good story/atmosphere - not to mention near-flawless multiplayer
Doom 2: A classic that people wanted to play again and again - also one of the first (or maybe THE first) mp games
Deus Ex: The original: Heheh, has to be on the list - such an epic story!
